Title: New Freespace Online Article
Post by: Riptide on July 13, 2012, 12:37:20 am
Here is a link to a new Freespace article in what I hope to be a weekly posting of an old game worth dusting off and trying again. With Freespace 2 being my favorite game of pretty much all time, I thought it would be a good one to start off with. For your enjoyment, and to continue the tradition of encouraging new gamers to join the ranks of the Galactic Terran Vasudan Alliance, here's a link to some new Freespace 2 praise:

It's a decent article, but it implies that upgrading the graphics engine is the only thing the SCP has been doing.  That short-changes all the rest of the hard work that has been done.

Well, to the casual viewer, the graphical upgrades are what stands out the most to people.

Sad, but true.  :blah:

I don't think it's sad so much as unavoidable.  If you're taking a first look at the game, of course you're going to see all of the awesome new shinies, but the under-the-hood stuff is obscured enough that the casual observer probably won't pick up on it.  Hell, there's probably a lot that I'd miss myself.  That doesn't make it any less important, though.

Hasn't it been a conscious choice, even, to cause the gameplay of retail FS not to change or change as little as possible? You can't really complain about achieving the desired effect.

nicely written article.  As for the debate on graphics over other improvements, things like speed and enhanced modding features is a little difficult to promote to someone with no previous experience with the game.

one little nickpick though

shows the pre mesh upgraded Hatty and Cain/Lilith models

But as I say a well written article!

Plus, if it inspires people that haven't ever played FS2 to give it a shot, well...they won't know what the gameplay was like before anyway.

Might be worth mentioning the AI is certainly a lot less derpy and the engine is light-years more flexible, though.

i don't know about the AI thing.  i saw one playing pong inside the strut section of a raynor, and i still get wingmen trying to hump my fighter.

Customising the AI's combat side is much improved, but it's navigation will remain the butt of the communities jokes for a long time yet to come.

Hey, it just wouldn't be FS without pants-on-head stupid wingmen, would it? :p

My apologies guys! I by no means meant to undermine the extreme efforts you've all done at SCP. I was merely stressing the graphics because that would be the thing a new comer to the series would notice first.

Well, you'll just have to write another article then. :D
