That is spectacular.  Funny how stepped leader on the left almost made it to the ground, but nope, got beaten by a hair so the other one gets the discharge.   Lightning is some crazy ****.

Sprites and Elves and Blue Jets are crazy ****, too.  I saw some sprites a few years ago on a night flight back home from Maine.  Really intense thunderstorms were way off in the distance and near constant lightning flashes.  But every now and then a very quick burst of eerie reddish light would be thrown up above the cloud tops.  Had no idea what I was seeing until later when I was watching a documentary on lightning and they showed some footage on the high-altitude phenomenon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upper-atmospheric_lightning).  Awesome stuff.

I was not aware of this at all. I've heard of like ball lightning and stuff, but still. Nature... you spooky.
