ok considering that I am not even sure if I like the effect of the following, I won't be upset by negative feedback. Don't worry about my feelings....what am I saying this is HLP, we never worry about something as trivial as someone's feelings. :P
Anyway, I took one side of a skybox:

and added an old nebula:

The thing I was trying to do, and succeeded at was to sandwich the stars between the base and the nebula that got added, I also used the neb to color them, so that it would appear to be more in front of the skybox side than part of it. Once again, success. I just ain't sure if I like it. So I figured that I would leave it up to you guys as to whether or not I would continue down this avenue.

It's interesting but the white clouds around the stars don't really look good on top of the purple nebula. Maybe change the colors a bit.

I think it looks cool. The issue you might have with it is that the resolution of the nebula is probably a much lower quality than the resolution of the rest of the skybox. So, in the end it looks like two different images, especially to the person who created it. If you somehow could find a higher resolution nebula to match your high resolution skybox background, I think it will look seamless.
Edit: On seccond thought maybe it's the difference in lighting. Try making the nebula a bit darker.

This, I think.

ok I used the background neb to color the poofy neb, then ran my brightstars script on it. The darker neb meant less bright stars in this iteration. Uploaded the image itself in 2048^2 so you could see what I am seeing. Viewing it at this resolution you can really see how it colors the stars behind it, as oposed the stringy nebs of the skybox base. While I like it better than the original (you guys were right), I'm still not sure if it makes the skybox any better. In other words, does it enhance the skybox, or detract from it?

I like it, but I wouldn't consider myself much of an art guy. I do in general prefer formations of nebulae in the distance as opposed to a monochromatic wasteland of color which drapes the entire mission space. This style seems to encourage the former.

I like it

I like it
Seconded.

in this one i wanted a wind blown becoming billowing effect.....

could you please blur the dark nebula.
I see dem pixels, and dey bad.
-
Apart from that, bloody glorious, Good Sir!
-
thanks for the high thum,bs, i do apreciate it. In this one I lowered the size of the dark nebs and blurred them more. Read as...raised the contrast level. and i accidntally saved it under the old name...so the other one is gone.

Trying the same thing in full neb mode, I haven't done the poofs, haven't even seen the base as a skybox. Just took the skybox side and added the nebula to it (the thing with the dark nebs).
