Title: Ubisoft UPlay DRM Installed a Backdoor Browser Plugin

Ubisoft's UPlay DRM installs a browser plugin without your consent and knowledge, and that plugin is capable of launching and installing programs from a remote connection.

Likewise.  The last Ubisoft game I bought was Silent Hunter IV, and I skipped the expansion, since Ubisoft decided to test to see if they could use it to ransom bug-fixes.  (For those unaware, you cannot download the 1.5 patch.  It comes exclusively with the U-Boat Missions expansion.)  uPlay turned that one-off decision into a boycott for me.  I will make a sole exception, eventually, for From Dust, since Ubisoft got caught in a lie about the DRM on that game, and were forced to remove it.

The sad thing is, though, the 1.4 patch for Silent Hunter IV removed the game's DRM (SecuROM and FADE, though FADE could not be fully extricated from the game's code, even by Ubisoft themselves), and those of us in the subsim community thought that it was a bright, new day, with Ubisoft turning over a new leaf.  Then, the next bug-fix patch came with a price tag, and the next sequel in the franchise came with uPlay.

Yeah, but those companies make games for consoles... how are you boycotting them if you're still buying their product (albeit on a console)?

I wonder when companies will learn that doing such things puts off their customers. People criticize Steam, but soon, it might become the least problematic DRM compared to all the other ones.
Fortunately, we still have plenty of indie developers, free games like FS SCP plus the few companies who aren't planning on introducing ridiculous DRM (well, I know Bohemia Interactive doesn't, I'm not sure if there are others).

Fair point, but if you were always on console, none of what is going on with PCs is a problem and therefore affects you little

Up until companies start making their own consoles for their games. That'll kill that

Well, the point is, people with at least a few brain cells also boycott the consoles. Obviously.

And yet big companies like Ubisoft manage to stay big and not go out of business.  Apparently they still have plenty of uninformed buyers who are unaware that they are alternatives to being treated poorly by the companies they buy from.

Me?  I am not going to buy game from companies like this.  I am not going to pirate their games either, as there are arguments out there that piracy can indirectly boost sales, and I don't want to indirectly boost their sales through word of mouth.

There are plenty of uninformed buyers who don't realize they're being treated poorly to begin with.

Hardly limited to video games market. If people realized what they really have right to, countless companies would go out of business, and courts would most likely choke.

Well....****. Somebody is going out on their ear for this (either for screwing up coding the plugin, or not being subtle enough for their Ubi-Overlords).

Everybody always seems to forget that the vast majority of the video game market are ****ing morons.  Think back to your last public multiplayer session.  How many people there displayed even a BASIC intelligence level?  Even past that, there's an alarming number of gamers who DO know what is going on, and are willing to buy it anyway, cuz they just HAVE to play that newest game.  It's got two more guns and fifty more achievements than the last version, man!

thats any and every market mind you. marketing is driven by appealing to morons. the product is irrelevant. they want to satisfy the ignorant horde cause thats where the money is. they piss it away because they dont know any better and will get anything just because someone else has one, and probibly wouldn't recognize poor (or superior) quality if it bit em in the ass. smart people dont piss away money and demand perfection out of anything they buy. it is not nearly as profitable of a crowd to market to.

I didn't have a gaming computer for a great many years. To me, it's avoiding an unfortunate situation to simply enjoy the game I bought.

the point remains valid. consoles screw you in some ways, pc games in others. either way, you're getting ****ed.
