1 - Someone mentions Starlancer in other thread.
2 - Reinstall Starlancer.
3 - Play it.
4 - End up doing model of most badass ship in the game.
5 - ???
6 - Profit.

Ah! It's nice to finally know where 80% of BP:WiH's stuff was ripped off from! :P
Nice ship, reminds me of the Vexor (You probably based it on the same ship the Vexor came from.)

BP:WiH? Vexor?

It's not BP:WiH's stuff.
More like, -Steve-O- :P
-
Starlancer is pretty much an inspiration for Blue Planet's ships (well the premade packs they used there really.)
And this is the Vexor I mentioned http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/FD_Vexor , It and you ship look like the Pukov.
EDIT: Sorry Droid, I'll correct myself, ahem.
-Steve-O-'s Ripoffs of Starlancer ships used heavily by the WIH Devs :P
-
rip off. nice. makes it sound like i ripped the model out of starlancer, slapped a new texture on it and called it my creation and in effect stealing it. when i posted about the first version of the vex i mentioned in the first sentence where the base design originated. http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=47063.msg958722#msg958722. based on or inspired by or even roughly resembling sure. i can handle being called a lot of things but a "rip off" and thus the implication of theft that term carries with it, not so much.

You won't find these offensive unless you want to. That's EXACTLY what ':P' exists for.

Nice Ship, I liked StarLancer a lot. StarLancer has had a great way of storytelling, and a really stupid game play. :banghead:
Was it difficult to run on Windows 7 / Vista ?
There was once a mod planed on the Freespace Engine, StarLancer the Sol War, no Idea if they still working on it.
It was from a Community that created some FreeLancer mods.

Yeah, if it played more like Freespace, it would've been better. I've installed and am running the game on Win7 32x without problems, unlike other old games SL never gave me too much problem.

Apologies if I offended you Steve-O, I though others would understand that I meant it in jest by using the ':p' smiley.
I actually have a lot of admiration for your work, I was only trying to poke fun at how close you work was to the originals (which, again, was not necessarily meant as a bad thing.)
Sorry I offended you. :(

PUTITINGAMENAO!!!
And cloaking Basilisks too :3
Srsly though Sarafan, is there any way you can import a sketchup file into a good prog like max for skinning?

sketchup supports collada in/exporting so you can shift it to pretty much any prog you want, cant speak for other programs but it seems to spew a ton of useless empties in blender and an of centre export but it is all fixable

Tornado Class cruiser, you face a lot of these in the game. Added a turret and torpedo launchers among other things.

I am really liking these! the coalition fleet i thought had the better looking ships and these more than do them justice. cant wait to so them UV mapped and all painted up. i mean just....damn! damn indeed. thumb of approval --->

Thanks, although I hope to do them all, the Alliance has only a few ships that are good looking, like the Kestrel and Inteprid, the rest is ugly as hell, the Coalition ships are way, way better although I could never figure it out which way is up on the Cyclone.

Are those hexagons actual polygons or are they a makeshift texture? If so, then I don't recommend keeping them on the mesh, as they serve no structural purpose. Instead, you should texture those details onto an image.
Nice job overall; next time please use [lvlshot] instead of [img] for mercy of us who use our smartphones to access HLP. :) I changed it in my quote of your prior post.

O.k., now I have no reason any more to not dig out the old disk and install it again :D
in 2004 I have had some troubles with it on XP: First crashing with the 3D sound enabled and than multiple crashes during loading - but after defraging (the .hog files have been a really mess after installing ) StarLancer worked well.
By the way: Nice work with the Coalition Cap ships.
A StarLancer Mod on the freespace engine would be nice.

Those are polygons, they're there as radar on the ship.

Yeah, there is a mission that you take out a pirate base that does lock up sometimes IIRC but aside from that I never had any problems with it.
A SL mod for FS would be awesome, I certainly thought about it but I'm only a beginner on this.

If you ever want to get your models in game, you really got to stop modelling in hull panelling because that just makes UVmapping that much harder and more annoying, plus its a waste of effort/polies because a texture with a normal map can do the same thing.
Just sayin'.
If you're never going to get them in game then take this over to fan fiction and art because it's not freespace modding!
-
Droid is right, finding the right balance between model and texture details is a pain.
Just remember though, a really low poly model can look awesome with a well done texture, texturing is where all the skill needs to be.

*gasp*
Didnt need to use the exclamation point for that. :p
I do intend to get them in-game once I learn how to do that.
-
IIRC there was someone else here on HLP that used SketchUp for a while.
BrotherByron I think?
For example the SF Basilisk in the mediavps was made in SketchUp, you could ask him how he got them in-game.

Cool, will do that, thanks! :)
-
Oh right, there's apparently a way to use a higher-polygon model with the hull plating modelled in to generate a normal map that has the same detail. I don't know how though.
-
If I recall BByron's technique, he makes it in SketchUp and then ports it into Blender and finishes it there. Of course, it's best if you hear straight from him.

FTR, There's a Tool which can export the models from a HOG file as .3DS files. Should be easy as pie to reconvert the fighters etc... Aside from the whole "seperated cockpit" issue.

3DS max has a "baking" option, under "render".
-
3ds max... costs...
Xnormal has baking options too but I dunno how to use it. It is possible it works only with zbrush, which costs too. 'd need to be checked out.
-
Blender can bake normals as well, but it looks to me like all those hexagons aren't actually separated from the hull at all, and just present as outlines.
Here: http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manual/Render/Bake

CS Cyclone class, IIRC this ship only shows up twice in the game, cool skeletical design but seems fragile. Added more guns since the game's description of it says its the lastest in Coalition technology.

Absolutely nothing for 1 month.
that, and I presume that they, like adobe do not actually mind you pirating their software for personal use the slightest, as that's how you learn to use the damn thing, and when you get into an actual company, you're more likely to request to purchase their product over someone else's because you've been so used to using it (or just buy it yourself if its your own business). I recall Adobe at the very least having made some statement like that regarding photoshop. They're not honestly expecting amateur users to fork over several thousand dollars, and I do believe that they'd rather have you "attached" to their product.

Is that one still alive? I checked the link that was here but didnt see that much activity there and what's this crossfire project? I know little about FL mods.

Actually you can still access it through moddb and some fl board i don't remember.

Thanks, I'll check on moddb.
Another model now, this time of the Alliance (yeah, I know this thread is for the Coalition but I dont want to start another one) and something that's not in the game, the Alliance cruiser Alsace (french obviously, thats why I included the flag). I found this one while for looking for concept art of the game (I've included its image).
Its a shame they didnt include it, you could really use some cap ship support in a lot of the missions. Its weird on the game that they send only you and fighters on the most important missions with barely existing support, the Alliance precious carriers rarely participate in things and even when you face enemy capital ships you can destroy their guns and systems but the only thing you cant do is deliver the finishing blow which has to be done by a cap ship of yours or bombers so the enemy ships just stay there toothless waiting for the kill.

I always wondered if it was possible to kill al-rahan.
-
Just a note on the bridge there, something a little more than a hexagonal prism would be nice, just to ensure that it looks like a bridge and not a (set of) polygon(s). Though I do love your ships.
-
I remember Starlancer! Haven't played that in ages! These models are looking really good Sarafan; agree with some previous points about moving details like those hexagons on the Cyclone to a normal map, but to model those on as you have done does show a real dedication. Your a darn good modeller to boot too! :) I think you do have the Cyclone the right way up btw, from what little i remember of it.

I think its possible but I'm not sure, this time I fired two Jackhammers on him and he still jumped out.

Yeah, I ran out of ideas of what to place there, thanks.

Thanks! The Yamato is one of the exceptions I said earlier, it looks good, its funny, it always reminded me of the Rodger Young from Starship Troopers:

The ugly alliance ships are the Washington and the Bremen (that one is just a slab of metal).

CS Krasnaya. One of two ships of its class in the game, the other being the Kozlov which you face when taking down the 2nd coalition fleet, both are old warhorses by the game's description (75 years old) and they certainly look old. When you face the Kozlov you can compare its size to see its as big as the Varyag but nowhere near as efficient. When you face the Krasnaya, its far too easy too disable it since its systems are so large and visible (especially the engines).
The mission where you face the Krasnaya is a particularly difficult one if you want to get a rank promotion on it because of distance. You're escorting the Reliant, the Krasnaya jumps in quite a distance from it, you have to go intercept its fighters while the Reliant shoots down the torpedoes then you have to rush all the way back to the Reliant because 3 bombers show up in 3 locations and target the Reliant with their torpedoes, you can only let the ship be hit by one or else it'll take too much damage and you can kiss the promotion goodbye. As if thats not enough after that you have to go all the way back to the Krasnaya to disable it quickly before it jumps out and then finally kill every fighter in the area again.
Of course you have to do all of this by yourself because your wingmates are the epitome of incompetence. :banghead:
