Title: Hotkeys to target subsystems
Post by: Legate Damar on August 07, 2012, 06:15:37 pm
Someone suggested I suggest for you guys to please implement this.

so pressing "v" as in  :v-old: doesn't cut it anymore?

I mean like you have an objective to destroy a certain turret but instead of trying to cycle through all of them to find the right one you just press the hotkey and it targets it automatically.

key details there mate ;)

not sure if implemented, can see it being handy though.

edit:

would a white bracket around said subsystem be better, I am thinking that busy missions often lean heavily on the F# keys for wing and ship identification, basically the bracket just makes it easier to identify the target subsystem without needing additional key binds

One heck of a suggestion post. :)
The actual idea was as follows: To allow the FREDer to assign hotkeys to specific subsystems in a similar manner as to wings and individual ships. Pressing "v" indeed doesn't quite cut it in some situations, and a hotkey would be a lot quicker. Stealth missions, in particular, would benefit from such system, one key would target a ship and cycle through subsystems the player has to scan. Also, missions where the main objective is to disable beam turrets on warships could have all "high priority" beams grouped onto one hotkey. Pressing it would cycle through the entire "important turret" list, switching targets if necessary. Also, all ships which still have such turrets operational would have white brackets drawn around them, doing wonders for situational awareness.
There's of course a lot more possibilities for such a feature, but the two situations I've described are incredibly common, appearing in retail campaign, BP and DE, just to name a few.

Having the option to "highlight" subsystems (or even put them on the escort list or something similar) would also be cool :P

Unless someone goes and edits in relevant subsystems to the hotkeys list in the missions I don't see how retail balance would be affected at all.
do the F-keys bracketing multiple ships affect retail balance?

is that a resounding "no" I hear?

Thought so.

Thats 90% of the difficulty of the Blue Planets right there. Turret sniping. "WHAT DO YOU MEAN MISSION FAILED I TOOK OUT THE FORWARD BEAM CANNONS. OH that other one ... -_-"

BP is one of the reasons I consider is such a good idea. And it's not going to get better in WiH2, either. Hotkeys for subsystems would be really helpful in pretty much all missions in BP that involve interacting with enemy capships.
