Title: I feel sorry for the residents of Kalamazoo, MI
Post by: MP-Ryan on August 09, 2012, 01:20:06 pm
http://www.calgaryherald.com/opinion/letters/Nose+Hill+Park+confrontation+makes+visitors+feel+unsafe/7050028/story.html

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/gun-loving-us-cop-draws-twitter-jeers-after-aggressive-encounter-with-canadians/article4471289/

Short version:  Off-duty cop from Kalamazoo, MI visiting Calgary, AB during the Calgary Stampede (a huge Western-themed city festival).  Guy and his wife are approached by two young men while out for a walk in a suburban natural park (nowhere near the inner city) where the people you are most likely to meet are primarily hiking, jogging, biking, walking their dog, etc.  Young guys ask the tourists 'Have you been to the Stampede yet?' twice.  Cop thinks this sort of thing is why he should be able to carry a handgun in Canada in case he needs to defend himself.

If asking a stranger if they've been to an event is grounds to get shot in Kalamazoo, I think I'm adding it to my list of places that "Hell will freeze before I set foot there."

Discuss.

Social conventions differ in other parts of the world. If they did that around here, people would probably think they're crazy.

And the second link gives a warning in Firefox. :/

Aardwolf's spin:

people trying to be friendly
guy and his wife don't understand the art of making conversation
people still trying to be friendly
"they are aggressive, disrespectful and menacing! ______ they didn't pull a weapon on me"

Let's see what we can best fill that blank with?

"Phew,"
"Good thing"
"Thank goodness"
"Thank God"
"Thank the Lord"
"Thank the Lord Jesus Christ"
"Thank the Lord Jesus Christ in Heaven" *crosses himself*

It's the icing on the cake, so to speak.

I'm loving these jokes

Quote
“At the off leash this morning when two terriers started to sniff my dog, If only Canada would allow my dog to pack heat. #nosehillgentlemen,” wrote Connor Turner.
Quote
“Ice cream truck just sped past house. Sir, I have no need for your refreshing pseudo-milk product treats. Goodbye. #NoseHillGentlemen,” teased Kikki Planet.

Begs the question what US Cops consider an aggressive tone. I mean, Girl Guides, watch out. You might get shot for asking a cop if they've tried your cookies yet

...hindsight that sounded really wrong

Quote
“I quickly moved between these two and my wife, replying, ‘Gentlemen, I have no need to talk with you, goodbye,’ ” he wrote.

So apparently conversation now requires a need to talk
That explains why I can never say "Hi" to people without strange looks

It's the particular turn of phrase that makes me suspicious of a troll. My own mother is a bit of a fundie. They don't really say that.

It would be more common to have just picked one of the 3 terms rather than using all 3 together, I agree.

But it's pretty easy to believe that there are people out there who are that stupid as to assume Canadians are all a danger. Maybe I just read too much NotAlwaysRight (http://notalwaysright.com/?s=canada) though. :p

QFT.

Also QFT.  I suppose that could just be his way of saying it but if he wanted to give God credit... I mean, if you wanted to give your dad credit for something, would you say, "I want to thank my father, Hank Angus William III, for..."??

I'd never seen that before, but it's hilarious.  I should submit this one:

I used to work for the CBSA (Customs/Immigration) at one of the many border crossings between Canada and the US, here: https://maps.google.ca/maps?q=nelway+bc&hl=en&sll=54.498365,-115.000188&sspn=20.847469,56.821289&t=h&hnear=Nelway,+Central+Kootenay+Regional+District,+British+Columbia&z=15

One day, a pair of young Americans (late teens) drives up to the border.  Keep in mind, all of my questions below are variations of the standard set:
Me:  "Hello!  Where are you from?"
Them:  "The US."
Me:  "Could you be a little more specific?  City, state?"
Them:  Answers the question.
Me:  "Citizenship?"
Them:  *confused*
Me:  "What country are you a citizen of?"
Them:  "The....US?"
Me:  *assumes this is correct*
Me:  What's the reason for your trip to Canada today?  Where are you going?"
Them:  "Just to see Canada."
Me:  *thinking "Oh here we go..."*
Them: Unprompted before I can ask my next question "Are there any moose in Canada?"
Me:  "Uh... it depends where you go, but yes, Canada does have moose.... so where exactl-"
Them:  "-will we see any moose today?"
Me:  "I have no idea.  There may be some along your route but normally they tend to bed down during the heat of the day.  Where were you planni-"
Them: "We really wanted to just see some moose or bears.  We heard Canada has lots of them."
Me:  "You might see some, but really the next stretch of road is pretty much the same as the one you just drove down to get here."
Them:  "Oh."

Though the worst one I ever dealt with was a Canadian girl who was at a big rave in the area, drove down to the border, walked into my office and said "Can I go to the US?"  I told her that was really up to the US Customs and Border Protection folks on the other side, at which point she said she just wanted to go for a drive.  So I sent her on her merry way to the US staff, and took note when they started to search her vehicle.  We got busy on our side with weekend traffic, so I didn't pay much attention but an hour later she pulls up at our side.  I open the window, just about to start the questions, and she bursts out "The bastards took my weed!"  After recovering my sense, I politely explained to her that carrying the 5g of marijuana she apparently had to the US could have gotten her arrested and thrown in an American jail for the weekend.  When I finished, she simply said 'Yeah, but they stole my weed!"  All I can figure is that the American's figured she was such an idiot that they simply seized the drugs and figured it was easier to send the idiot back to us than try to take her through the legal system.

I tell you, if you ever want to simultaneously see the worst and most hilarious members of society, work at an international border crossing.

indeed, sometime We watch the border/customs/immigration type programs, its funny to watch the total brain fails, such as you cant work on a strait tourist visa, no Buckingham Palace is not in Birmingham (yes genuinely watched that one from one that turned out to be someone trying to sneak in) and that yes Customs can seize goods you bought over seas if you go over your allowances.

Been checking that NotAlwaysRight link, now I understand why a 'North American Union' and a 'amero' type currency is a good idea.. :P

However, it's pretty jarring to see how it seems that a portion of people in the USA are not aware of geography or are even aware of there being a Canada at all. Hope it's not a widespread phenomenon.
Another thought...those clueless people might just be the next group of people targeted by game companies to increase sales, a few years from now..

Unless the site is just fictional as well as satirical of course.

You guys seem to be confusing "guy gets used to carrying item after two decades, feels vulnerable when he doesn't have it" with "guy lusts for violence"

You could be right
But you could have also overlooked the instinct to go for your gun after having been asked a simple question. There's vigilant, and then there's paranoid. Paranoid is going to get someone shot

Eh... the big thing is that he anticipated armed aggression from a pair of strangers who were probably just trying to be social. The fact that he would have responded in kind isn't so bad.

Then again, maybe all it would take is one of these guys reaching into their pockets to send this cop into shoot-to-kill mode.

He was probably just exaggerating after the fact, when the even actually occurred, they probably just set him on edge for whatever reason.  Quaffing around after the fact, he decided to sound like John Wayne 'cause he thinks that's cool.

No. If someone says "thank the Lord Jesus Christ" in normal conversation, they're Christian. 99% confidence.

Beware the Maple Terror!

In fairness, the last time we tried to invade Canada, they did kick our asses all the way back to Washington D.C., sacked the capitol, and went home.

Also, Canada should make that image their official flag.

To be fair the British burned DC, they had real pros, crack troops over from the Peninsular War.  1812 was a bloody disaster as far as the early land engagements, but it did lay the groundwork for an actual professional US Army.

Anyway I saw Royal Canadian Moose Cavalry flip an M1A2 over with it antlers once, it was on the internet.

I did come across this which does make more sense

Park paths aren't 4-lane highways, and conversation doesn't require an invitation. And considering everything else stupid this guy has said, I'm skeptical about the claim that they were yelling or, as the original spiel put it, talking in an aggressive tone.
