Hi there. It's been a long time since my last post in HLP... This is some kind of a feature request and info request.
So, just to clarify. It won't be possible in the near future to introduce in FreeSpace the feature of using non english characters and accentuations, like á-ú, à-ù, ñ, ¿, ¡, cirillic alphabet, asian alphabets, etc..., to allow translations to other languages?
I know this has been discussed maaany times, but it's I don't want to have hope in vaine. So, it will be possible, or not? If not, I'll keep working with my translations with ortographic difficulties :(. If yes, then hurra! :D
Please, tell me yes, in the name of almighty freespace :v: . Crossing fingers...

We have support for new fonts, have we not ? I don't see what isn't already doable here.
-
We don't, actually. What we need is support for ttf fonts, a feature that was prototyped by m|m, but not developed further.
-
Actually, this is supported. Polish version of FS had additional characters for the translation. Unfortunately, it causes slight problems with some custom campaigns, for example in Procyon Insurgency I've had an object named "Unknown" and another, named "Unknownó". Normally, FS wouldn't show "ó", because it's not in the standard font, but I've had Polish fonts which do have this character. So, additional characters work. There's a font creation tool for FS somewhere, so I don't see why other alphabets shouldn't be doable (even the ones like Cyrillic or Chinese). Also, there was a Japanese translation for FS somewhere, but it ran on a non-SCP, non-retail version of FS.

The feature is actually mostly complete except that it can't handle the special characters FS uses which would need some additional effort to work properly.

So you are working on it, m!m? Thank you! I hope you complete it soon. I'm eager to start with my translation.

Having working TrueType-font support is only one requirement for a better translation support. The other problem is that FS still uses single byte characters which means that Unicode support is not easily possible currently, if I'm not mistaken.
