Title: FSO Installer : why is it still up
Post by: MatthTheGeek on August 21, 2012, 08:24:16 am
Thread title says it all. We keep having threads like this (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=81730.msg1630649#msg1630649) or help requests on IRC on a weekly-ish basis because newbies are still trying to use the old, outdated installer.

Now, this is not their fault. Although it is written all over the place on HLP that the installer is obsolete, that's not necessarily the case outside of HLP, where mirrors are probably set up. However, the installer grabs its data from somewhere (that's the point of an online installer, grab everything from a single place).

If that place is under our control, we need to take it down now. Preventing the old installer from working at all is the best way to make sure people don't end up with broken installs, until the new installer gets completed.

So the question is : can we do that, and if so, why hasn't it been done yet.

googling "FSO in" reveals

first two links are to http://www.fsoinstaller.com/ with working downloads

next is http://scp.indiegames.us while no installer download link there is still a section about it and is perhaps not helping matters

And the fact that regardless of personal opinions on the matter, it is still mostly functional, and what is broken can be repaired. The repair part is just taking longer than anticipated.

And the answer to your question should be obvious. If we could have, we already would have and we wouldn't be having this conversation. So maybe it's not as simple as you idealistically think it is.

Then why can't we, if I may request more information.

If it was taken down, a site explaining why, and linking (or better yet, mirroring) the manual install instructions should be put up.

We all know it's impossible, because there are mirrors all over the place, especially in places we have no control over. What will we do when the new installer will be ready ? Let the old installer, but still functional enough to give everyone broken installs, lying around ? By taking down its data source now, we'd just be doing in advance what we'll have to do anyway.

We can't remove all the installer mirrors but if we can render it non-functional, that would be better than letting everyone get corrupted installs.

EZ, have the old installer install the new installer; with a note saying that that's what's going down, if the user wishes, they can start with the new installer {recommended} by clicking here (http://here).

We still control the setup lists, right?  The files that tell it what to list as downloadable, what to call it, and where to get it from?
