Pakistani police have arrested an imam accused of planting burnt pages of the Koran in the bag of a Christian girl accused of blasphemy, officials say.
The girl was detained two weeks ago near the capital Islamabad after an angry mob demanded she be punished.
However, a witness has testified that imam Khalid Chishti put the pages in the bag himself, local media say.
The case of the girl, named as Rimsha, who is said to be about 14, has sparked international condemnation.
A report by a government-appointed medical board seen by the BBC suggests the girl has a mental age of less than 14.
I really hope the mob he incited turn on him and give him a taste of his own medicine. His crime is after all worse. Even forgetting about the attempt to frame the girl, he's a muslim who burnt the Koran, surely far worse than someone of another religion doing it.

In addition reading between the lines the girl has no been cleared and

This could get messy.

I hope it'll open some eyes on what religious fanaticism leads to. It's unlikely, but there's always hope.
-
Well a few people might be annoyed enough at being used that they react more carefully next time.

The Turkish newspaper Hurriyet has an other report about archaic justice, hitting the right guy:
The woman, a local in Isparta's YalvaƧ district, made headlines recently when she severed the head of a man who had been raping her and blackmailing her for months, tossing it into the open in the village square. karajorma, you are not a Pakistani Muslim cleric who tries to frame mentally ill Christian girls into getting lynched, so you are not permitted to judge him.
-
Pfft. Religion.
I'll bust out the popcorn for this one.
-
I saw this issue in the paper the other day. Good to see that the poor girl is innocent; from memory she's handicapped, isn't she? I believe her parents made the argument that she wouldn't have known what she was doing anyway if she did it and no one seemed to give a ****.
-
Suddenly the 'bad guy' turns innocent, and the brain behind it all turns out to be the one everyone trusted! What a tweeest!
Seriously though, I hope this guy gets what he deserves. Planting false evidence on people is bad enough, but taking advantage of a mentally disabled kid to do it is just sick.

If this girl is mentally impaired, then how does she possess the advanced reasoning and philosophical skills needed to choose a religion?

Implying people in backwards third-world religious theocracies are really allowed to choose their religion. :P
-
I believe it says her parents are Christian, and therefore because she is her parents child she is associated with Christianity by default

Crazy arabs, conspiracy theorists, people who watch fox news...
-
Pakistanis aren't Arabs. :p
That's like calling a Mexican a crazy Yankee. :p
-
its sad that in this day and age people dont know the difference from an arab and a muslim.
-
arab = guy in a turban
muslim = guy yelling "allah akbar!"
-
Yeah, yeah. So I thought more of the Middle East was arabic than actually was. It's not like Pakistan is that far out.
its sad that in this day and age people dont know the difference from an arab and a muslim.
I was thinking of it as most of the people in this region. I made a little mistake. This was uncalled for.

Not every Muslim is an Arab, but all Arabs must be Muslims. ;)
Well, there have been some Christian Arabs, but they getting more and more pressure to convert from guys like that Pakistani Iman.
Oh, and there is no such thing as an Jewish Arab, even if Jews have been living in Arabian Country since ancient times. ;)
Speaking about the Pakistani Iman:
According to some News his defence is "I was framed by the government !" lol.
To sad that were is a good chance that most of the people in his Village will believe him, not the three witnesses.
-
So there are no non-muslim Arabs except for those who are not muslim? Fascinating.
-
advanced reasoning and philosophical skills needed to choose a religion
ahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
-

fail
a person rarely gets to choose a religion, most follow in the family tradition or go non religious. when someone does choose a religion it often comes down to family or pier group advice/pressure or the local norm/national religion. the fact that the girl is mentally impaired has to be carefully considered
suggests the girl has a mental age of less than 14.
this could mean a lot of things, ability to engage in social interactions, motor skills, ability to perceive the world. take my sister at 26 her ability to interact socially and ability to live alone are both impaired but her academic IQ is borderline genius, so be careful making assumptions based on blanket statements.
