Title: PC woes....
Post by: Unknown Target on June 13, 2002, 08:08:53 am
Gah! I'm using the PC at work to post this, but my computer at home is non-functioning! Whenever I boot it up, it goes through everything normally, but it gets jammed on the DOS screen that you see just before you start up Windows, you know, where it shows things like, "C:\WINDOWS\DIR\file\file\.exe, etc, etc, etc" and then it goes to the login screen. Well, as stated before it locks up there. It's not a hard lock, because the cursor is still blinking...
Help me please!

Reinstall windows (again) is the best option....clean all the mank out.

But what I need to be able to do is use the computer for awhile, because I won't be able to do that for awhile, I'm going to reinstall with WinXP, so untill I have enough $ to get it, I'm going to hold off on such a drastic measure.
Besides, I have a ton of data on there that I need to save, and safe mode won't let me do that, of course.;)

Can you get your computer into safe mode? Because if you can, you either have a driver error, or one of your startup programs is causing the lockup. If it is one of your startup programs, use msconfig (start, run, type msconfig) and configure your startup programs.
On the other hand, it could be a kernel32 error... This is sometimes caused by a faulty swap file. Just delete the win386.swp from dos and it will recreate it. But then, most of the time kernel32 errors are caused by a computer's CPU getting too hot... Does your CPU fan work and connected properly?

If your computer is really cluttered, dont bother. Just go to dos, save what files you need, and reinstall everything.

Sesquipedalian's cure for random, seemingly causeless computer errors:

1) Open computer case.
2) Plug in standard household vacuum cleaner.
3) Turn on standard household vacuum cleaner.
4) Place nozzle of standard household vacuum cleaner against CPU heat sink.
5) Think about how much you could go for a beer right now.
6) Wonder why you didn't think to grab a beer while walking past the fridge to get your standard household vacuum cleaner.
7) Get annoyed with the appropriate person for putting the kitchen, and thus the fridge, and thus the beer, so far from your computer room.
8) Reverse above steps, and then go get a beer.

Disclaimer: Sesquipedalian provides no guarantee whatsoever that this method will actually fix your computer.  If these instructions are followed carefully, however, the situation will seem better to you, because at least you will have a beer in your hand.

N.B. This solution works best with Canadian and/or German beers, or preferably one of each.

lol. Although there is the slight problem of causing a lot of static, damaging all the components of the computer and wrecking it :)
