a mod has been given a cease and desist order by WB after they noticed some space being taken up on Moddb. amazingly those modders are fighting back with a petition (and apparently they're looking to hire a lawyer).
the petition: http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/save-merp-from-corporate-greed/sign.html
the mod: http://www.moddb.com/mods/merp-middle-earth-roleplaying-project
Remember the Galatea. Remember Vasuda Prime. Remember Nexus BSG!

Uh, I hate to break it to you, but they likely got C/D'd for a far different reason.
They stole a name. MERP is the name of the old Rolemaster-based tabletop RPG for the setting. Conflicting with a previously licensed product is going to make people unhappy for very different reasons than corporate greed.

I signed! **** WB, seriously.

I don't care about this particular mod, but I agree with the sentiment.
Wait, what did WB have to do with BSG? Are WB and NBC/U the same now? Or are you just lumping them together as fan-hating copyright asshats?

yep now i feel derpy

The name was most likely a honest mistake, but I guess they should have checked. I'd say WB might be right on this one, using an identical name to a licensed product isn't exactly a good thing, if only because it creates confusion. If the case was more clear cut, I'd be all for it.
