Title: photoshop mapping test
Post by: Nico on June 14, 2002, 09:28:48 am
(http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/ott/variouspics/navettetest.jpg)

it was something I had to do at college ( 120 polys ), mapped with photoshop. Photoshop sure is cool, I'll make better maps now (http://forum.hardware.fr/images/perso/yes%20papa%20!!!.gif)

you must tell me how you did  the rusty areas:)

instead you can do better the "holes" on the white text  in this way (little trick i discovered after some trials):

when you have done all the texture, as last step, duplicate the text and make one of the 2 layers invisible (so you have a backup)
then rasterize the layer that is visible
press "q" (quick mask)
now you can use all the paintin tools but as result instead of painting with the selected color you will paint with a red color over the layer, and more important you can set the opacity for any single brush stroke using the pressure parameter(so you will have red strokes partially transparent)
after painting press again "q" and you will exit quick mask mode
the red strokes will disappear and they will be transformed in selections
if you cut now the selected pixel you will make nice holes and scratches

the result will be like the scratches on the red band in this pic:

the point is that the holes will be more "smoothed", less defined, with a better general appearance
there are other ways to be honest (like using the feather option while selecting) but this is the better because in quick mask mode you can have an idea of the final result and because its easyer to give the scratches the shapes you prefer

if you don't want to rasterize the layer you can apply same process on the background, make layer via cut and bring it over the text, but i suggest to use the "normal" method

you can use also gradients in quick mask mode to make an "opacity gradient"

ghhhh... the big deal here is that my copy of photoshop at home is the english one, but the one at college ( the one I did this map with ) is the french version... so I kindda  understood nothing of what you  said lol.
ok, opening photoshop and d/ling my psd map...

ok, first, for the rust, i just draw it with the airbrush tool (large smooth areas ) and the paintbrush tool ( little, more "damaged" areas ), using the brush on the 4th line ( the one made of lots of dots ). clicked a lot rather than holding down the mouse, with opacity at 35%. that's it :)
For the rest, I think I know what you're talking about, but for that, I just made a text layer, and deleted the parts by adding a mask, which makes the parts you draw over transparent.

eh i wasn't sure if you did the rust by manual paint or filter...i've spent days just searching a way to do that not manually so i hoped you did it:)
...
...
about what i said...just try to press "q" with a rasterized layer selected (a layer that is not a text layer or a vector/shape layer that are resolution independent, you must transform em in bitmap using the rasterize option) its similar to what you already did btw, for you edit the layer in quickmask mode

ok :) I should have used another brush to make the dents in the painting smoother I guess.
For the rust effect, it's really quick to do really, a good minute and it was done :)

Venom can you post a smaller version of the map so we can see how you put it together.
