In Freespace 2 (and probbaly 1 also) there's a misc key-binding for 'free look view'.
I assume that by activating this mode, the input device would switch from control of the craft to control of the point-of-view angle.
So far it doesn't seem to do anything for me.
Am I doing it wrong?
-
Letsee... I think for FSO you have to hold down the key in order to stay in that mode, once you release it goes back to "normal."
-
Pretty sure I've done that, but I'll try it again now.
EDIT: I'm playing Diaspora atm, and I also went into FSO just now and the free look view doesn't do anything in either, whether pressing once or holding the key.
-
Found this through google.
I was pretty lucky. Freespace2 already had a command called "Free Look View" which allowed slewing with the flight controls when held down. So basic functionality was there.
So... it's definitely supposed to do it, but it's not working for me for some reason.
-
default on a standard EN keyboard in FSO is a single press on the ./del key at the bottom of the numeric keypad with the enter key next to it to lock the camera and use the keypad to fly the ship
-
The del key enables external camera view for me, and enter locks the camera, as you've said.
The default key for free look view is Numpad 0, I believe.
Could someone confirm that this function actually does anything? Maybe my game is bugged.
-
I think I found the answer...
I've been meaning to introduce hat slew commands after implementing TrackIR. The Free Look View command doesn't really do anything right now and I could have it such that you can use it to toggle from quick slew to pan slew.
-
It used to work. I can recall holding down numpad 0 would turn off the hud and replace it with just a red dot to show your facing direction, and then you could look all around.
-
Yes, it did work in retail.
-
So wait, did the SCP break retail functionality to add TrackIR support?
-
It appears so. Though this functionality wasn't exactly the most used. Anyway, since we now have Antipodes 8 and the new pilot code, I'd propose adding the function back and adding a new one for the TrackIR switch.

Bug confirmed. Mantis ticket here. (http://scp.indiegames.us/mantis/view.php?id=2713)
I'll see what I can do. :)

Thanks!
Would be great to have this feature for us peasants without TrackIR.

What? Noooo, I'm trying to assemble a FreeTrack setup. Don't fix this bug or I'll lose all motivation!

Freelook mode allows you to only look around, while TrackIR stuff allows you to lean in/out/sideways... which is a big bonus for mods such as Diaspora that make good use of render to texture functions.

:bump:
I've got a preliminary build on r8688 that enables freelook mode for the keyboard. Currently it works irregardless if you have the freelook mode key held down or not, and it doesn't recognize mouse input controls.
Still, it's a start.

...irregardless...
hnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggg

The funny thing is with it, that if you go past the view limits it'll start turning the craft, lol.
