As I am still using Win2k, I've been running foul of the annoying "%1 is not a valid Win32 Application" bug with some of the newer TCs and SCPs.
This is purely down to VS2010 setting a flag which makes Win2k trip up.
Since I really want to play the new B5 and Diaspora TCs without breaking my boycott, I've been exploring workarounds and there are 2 realistic ones:
1) KernelEx for Win2k - Cleaner but experimental and risky
This basically backports some functions from later versions of Windows. Most testing has been done on japanese Win2k so, to quote C3PO, it may not be entierely stable ;)
See: http://oldcigaret.info/win2k/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=746
2) Hack the EXE - Easy and works but may trip Anti-virus
Quite easy; Download and unpack this:
http://www.uinc.ru/files/neox/PE_Tools.shtml
Then load the B5/Diaspora FS exe into it, hunt down the MinorSubsystem Version and change it to 0000 instead of 0001 (MajorSubsystem Version can stay as 0005)
More detailed instructions: http://oldcigaret.info/win2k/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=931
I've just tested this on Diaspora and it's now happily running!
So, without further adieu, it's time to break out the SW3D Pro and shoot some toasters! :D

Why are you boycotting later Windows versions? Do you like having open season declared on you by malware authors or something?
At any rate, Microsoft's anti-competitive behavior has declined since the '90s, which is what I thought made everyone so upset at them to begin with.
-
I don't know about you but when I boycott I still get the product anyway.
They just don't make money off of it.
No, I don't pirate it, what are you talking about.
-
Good to know. I provide Win98/Win2K compatible builds of FSO in the official release threads [though we haven't had such a thread since 3.6.12 came out] so that's another option.

im still waiting for reactos to go beta. and frankly im not giving ms any more money.

I'm glad you asked! Please take this pamphlet explaining my stance! Also, have you met Jesus? :D
But no, I just hate this whole online activation crap and have been actively avoiding anything that requires it. This does suck a bit as this includes Windows and Steam, but it has allowed me to discover lots of cool indie games and saved me a crapload of money to boot! (Although this has mostly gone into fuelling my car :()
I loved the open-season comment
I don't even run AV and I've yet to be infected by anything! But to be fair, my main system is a Linux system, the Win2k's main purpose is for games and dealing with retro crap like my PDA.
@Nuke - Me too! But I fear it's a long way off and they keep moving the goalposts!
@Goober - That's awesome to know! Thanks! I take it those wouldn't be compatible with B5 or Diaspora tho'...?

you are aware that FSO works on linux just as well as on windows?
-
I wouldn't say 'just as well', but yeah, I really need to get around to making an ebuild for SCP on mine at some point... although B5 didn't have a linux port last time I looked.
I'm not a big fan of gaming on Linux atm; Maybe it's the freaky mutant Gentoo distro I'm using, but I often have to tweak so much stuff between different games to get things to work right or they have a crapload of dependencies on stuff my streamlined build doesn't have. It's almost like being back in the DOS days when I had different boot disks for different games!

linux gives me a massive headache, thats why i look forward to reactos so damn much. especially with ms trying to severely alter the course of windows to something completely unusable.

But it certainly beats having it on Windows 2000, right?
-
But... I quite like Windows 2000! :nervous:

We do have one now (and have had for a considerable time ... link (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=40036.0))
(and once we get the whole re-release of TBP 3.4 Final going, it'll work with the cross-platform wxLauncher ... )

I'd be off windows completely right now if it wasn't for the fact that I cant seem to get FRED working in linux (wine, nope, VM next)
I'm ditching my android phone too, all this movement to the cloud and someone elses control is a no go. I want control of my technology, I can handle it.
my droid uploaded all the pics I took since october without my permission to google plus, I'm on top of this sort of thing, if it got by me, it was designed to slip by you. Ditched facebook too. I dont want the corporate internet of the future, I want 1998-2004 back with kick ass hardware from the future!

That'd be awesome.

As fun as that sounds, it is also very impractical and extremely unlikely to work the way you expect it to.
