Title: Freespace 2 is now on Desura!
Post by: DireWolf on September 16, 2012, 10:05:36 am
(Apologies if this has been mentioned already, but I couldn't find it anywhere else on the board)

Right what it says on the tin. Maybe this will divert even more traffic our way  :D

U NO RUN ON OSx?!
BTW, if FSO was on Desura as well, they both would work together nicely.

Eh, whats the point?
GoG already had it like forever. GoG is also cheaper (Desura wants 6 euro for it, GoG wants 6 dollar for it) for people in the EU.
No mention of FSO on that page or anything.

This thing is bizarre. How are they distributing it for Linux (and eventually OS X)? They can't use FSO (not legally, anyway), so are they using Wine or something? I don't get it, but I don't feel like paying $6 to find out.

the only other time i've heard of desura is back when there was that "why can't we get FS on desura?" bit here.  so, i gather it's just a game store?

its a steam style game distribution and management thing from the guys behind moddb, but yes it does sell games as well.

I don't have Desura myself, but I do have a bunch of friends who use it themselves.
The reason I'm excited for this is that Desura also hosts tons of mods, and if the team were to get a good FSO installer up and running, it would make make the project far more visible and accessible.

Speaking of which, wasn't Goober working on just such an installer a few months ago? What happened to that?

Yea, the main benefit of this would be getting FS2 mods on Desura, making it easy to distribute and install them.

Every time someone asks, dev is pushed back ;). More seriously, I think he is still working on it whenever he has time to do so, though I'd suspect SCP coding takes priority over this since we have nicely written manual install guides.

3.6.14 seems to be taking a lot of the coder's time atm, hopefully once it is out Goober will have time to make some headway on the installer

Yes, because the tons and tons of non-BSG related content we have produced here is in any way at risk of being deleted as well.

I would ask you guys to leave your paranoia at home. As far as I am concerned, Desura is an excellent platform that we can use to simplify install procedures. Does this mean that we should abandon our own efforts to build an installer? Hell No. Relying on a single platform that is largely outside our control would be stupid.

But.

Should we ignore this platform and the benefits it offers? Hell No Again.

I wouldn't say we shouldn't use Desura cause of the way they treated Diaspora. But I would advise anyone thinking of using it to distribute their mod to be careful for that reason.
