There is a post I had from a year and a half ago here and I am having the same problems except doing the DL of the installer didnt fix it this time. From poking around the forums it seems the FSO installer isnt seen in to good a light anymore.
Anyway, I followed the instructions from the manual DL page and when I browse files from the launcher and try to put the file fs2_open_3_6_12_r_INF I get the error for "the launcher must be in the same directory as the binary you are trying to use"
According the FAQ, all I have to do is delete launcher6.ini but I cant find it anywhere in the FS2 files. And according to one guy in my other post, that file is generated and Im not sure what he means by that.
Is there something obvious I am doing wrong? Am I trying to put the wrong file in when I click browse from the launcher?
The help is greatly appreciated

Could you post a screenshot of your FreeSpace directory?

I'm a little confused by the .app folder extensions - did you download Mac .apps?
-
Not that I am aware of. When I tried to use the FSO installer it tried to put mac and linux stuff in there but it wouldnt DL then because of an error.
I'll load up the installer again to see the exact wording

Don't use the installer. Stick to the manual install instructions. Do you have WXLauncher?
-
Also, I can launch the game by double clicking the "fs2_open_3_6_12_r_INF" from the folder but I obviously dont get any pretty upgrades. So the game and mods are at least working to some extent
No I have the 5.5 Launcher. I'll try getting that one

Ok i have the WX launcher installed now. See if I can get it working from there
I cant get anything to go into the game root folder. And the file 'fs2_open_3_6_12_r_INF' is missing from the list when I browse. I would assume that is the one I would need in the root folder

Scratch this post I got everything working. I think DL'ing the new launcher did it
Appreciate it
