Title: Transferring Pilot Files from one computer to another...
Post by: Doctor Robert on September 24, 2012, 09:45:29 pm
Hello, I've been playing this uber-awesome, fantastic, epic beyond all believe, freaking amazing game known as Freespace for a little over a year now.

I just got a new laptop today, and naturally first on my list for re-installing is Freespace. And here is my problem:

Is there any way possible to transfer pilot files from one computer to another?

I have the latest version of Freespace open. I'd greatly appreciate help, thank you.

The entire FSO install is portable, so if it's an option for you, you could just transfer it over by one medium or another.

To tell you the truth, that's what I did... But when I started Freespace on the new laptop, everything was fine except I was pilot-less...

Pilot files might be stored somewhere else now with the new code.

I did reinstall FSO thinking I needed to (turns out I didn't). Would this have any effect on my pilot-less-ness?

Go into your FS2 directory, then go into data\players\single and look for your old pilot file. Make a copy of it.

There should be a folder named "inferno" in the players\single folder, open this and then paste the copy of your old pilot file here.

The reason for the copy, is that I can't guarantee the newer FSO won't corrupt it. This should hopefully preserve the old pilot file in the players folder so that you may be able to use it with an older FSO.

If it does corrupt the pilot file, then all I can say is "sit tight" until the 3.7 rolls around and the pilot converter tool is done being forged. :(

What about the whole Win depiness that tends to save file in the User appdata folder or something ? There have been isues about that in the past.

The Windows VirtualStore ... Google the location for that.  If you have FSO installed to a folder protected by Windows (Program Files, Windows dir) then all changes will instead be written to the VirtualStore directory.
