Here is a pretty good article on it, certainly changed my view on the whole thing from being absurd and silly to absurd and clever:

Title: Re: Gangnam Style
Post by: Nuke on December 24, 2012, 10:45:01 am
im no audiophile, but i do insist all the instruments be of analog types. recorded through mics, or through non-digital amplifiers in the case of electric guitars/bass, and that vocals not be processed. **** like drum triggers and autotune immediately flag music as crap to my ears. im barely tolerant of keyboards even.

Title: Re: Gangnam Style

no i can and do. i have a 30 year old stereo wired to my sound card though (i found the amp in the dumpster). im not against digital storage of music, just digital instrumentation.
Title: Re: Gangnam Style
Post by: Ghostavo on December 24, 2012, 10:59:21 am
But you just said you are against, for example, voice processing... how do you expect it to be recorded?
Title: Re: Gangnam Style
Post by: Nuke on December 24, 2012, 11:03:21 am
thats irrelevant (its one thing to record digitally, its another thing entirely to synthesize everything, or feeding sampled sound data through so many algorithms that it sounds flat), i just dont want any square waves that i can make with a few 7400 series chips and a speaker.
Title: Re: Gangnam Style
Post by: Ghostavo on December 24, 2012, 11:11:01 am
You are mistaking digital instrumentation with MIDI-like sounds.

One thing is to say you dislike one instrument (or sound) or another, but to categorically state that you dislike a whole range of instruments, which can mimic another range which you state to like is... well... absurd.
Title: Re: Gangnam Style
Post by: Nuke on December 24, 2012, 12:59:59 pm
your thinking too hard. you shouldn't do that, you might forget math or something. so lets put it another way, i dont like electronic instruments, unless they are analog, and i dont like excessive post production, which i think makes the sound flat. thats not even touching on the trends in modern music that i despise. it need not go further than that, or im going to start demanding the return of 8 track tapes and make general get off my lawn type statements.

That's like saying you like movies filmed in one take, though; it's something that doesn't actually happen unless you're dealing with complete incomptents. If there are noticeable imperfections, you'll do over, and have for at least a couple generations.

its like saying you make a movie without using CGI and sound effects editted in afterwards, its possible, it probably wont have the mass global appeal, but it can still be good with a enjoyable character all of it's own

No, it's like saying when you blow a stunt or the actor corpses it'll get left in. You're comparing additional postwork to what you've stated already are production errors.

LOL that's nowhere near what he is proposing here. He's just complaining against over-produced, over-synthethized and over-plasticized pieces of sound which are distributed as aledged pieces of music. I am not as pessimistic but I understand.
