Im having trouble with the Diaspora Mission Designer. everytime I try to add a Heavy raider in the mission Im creating, It keeps crashing and a message box opens up saying freespace 2 open has encountered a problem. How can I fix this so the Mission designer can run Smoothly?
-
Have you installed the 1.0.3 patch?
If so, run the debug version of the mission designer (you'll find it in your Diaspora folder) and post the FRED2_open.log that you'll find in your data folder afterwards.
-
Here it is I hope this is the right one?

Protecting the 12 Colonies mission.fs2 is much too long a filename. I did warn about being over 27 characters in the Walkthrough if I remember correctly. Fix that and then try it again as it seems to be causing a cascade of failures.
-
I actually resaved it as testmission_2 can I delete Protecting the 12 colonies?
-
I'd advise doing that if you have backed it up.
-
Now Im having trouble opening the saved Fred file I saved, attached is the Fred2 open file. is it the name should I rename the file to something shorter?

I noticed you are using an Intel Graphics based machine and you haven't turned off shaders, I'm somewhat surprised the game even ran for you.
As for the mission, I can't see any indications of trouble in the log, can you post the mission itself please? All names for missions must be 27 characters or less though (31 with the .fs2).
-
how do I turn off the Shaders? and here is the game file.
-
In the launcher go to advanced settings -> Troubleshoot -> Disable GLSL (Shader) support. Save that and when FRED Launches it will use the same settings.
As for the mission, there's nothing wrong with it I can detect so the issue seems to be with your FRED setup.
-
Sorry I sent you the wrong mission I saved here is the current mission. my apologies this is the correct one.

-
In my last post I sent the corrected file. the other one I showed you was the wrong one.
-
That one still loads fine for me. Have you turned off Shaders like I suggested earlier?
-
yes I turned off shaders, however I still can't open the saved file in Mission designer. I still get that message box saying Fred2 open has stopped working.
-
The odd thing is that you're getting a crash that isn't being reported by the log. It's business as usual and then the log just ends.
Do other missions work?
-
no when I try to open the test mission that I created in the quick start guide, that missions dosn't open either. I can play both missions in game, but I can't open the file in mission designer. this started when I was following the full walkthrough guide in creating the Persephone mission. I got all the way up to the part where I had to add four heavy raiders to the game when I was finished with that task I tried to save it and that when the problem started. I would hate to have to do it all over because Iv gotten so far in building this mission.
-
you know what, I just going to have to start from scatch because this is annoying, I hate to have to do this but Im going to delete this file and just recreate the mission all over again from scatch.
-
Don't delete it. The mission is just a text file. Open it in Notepad and see if anything looks funny.
-
In the FREDdocs folder you'll find another copy of the tutorial mission. See if it will open that.
-
OK, Here is another File i saved, I think I discovered the problem I just don't know how to fix it. so I started from sratch, and everything was going fine when I was creating the mission but when I got up to the part where I had to bring In four Heavy Raiders, that when my problem started. I think it might be something with the Heavy Raiders Im not sure. here is my saved file again. Im still having the same issue trying to open the file in Mission designer, I keep getting that annoying box that says FRED 2 Open has stopped working. Im sorry to annoy you with this I just want this to work so I can enjoy the game.

and I did open the tex file however I don't know what to look for or How would I know if something doesnt look right?
-
The mission still works for me. Can you post your latest FRED2_Open.log for me? And does FRED open the mission file I mentioned in the post above?
-
here is my latest fred_2 file and yes the tutorial mission opened with notepad.

I'm really at a loss as to what is causing this.
Can you try this build (http://fs2downloads.com/Misc-Downloads/Builds/Alter_ship_Flag.7z) instead. You'll need to have 7zip or something similar installed to extract it.
-
I tried using the builds but unfortunately I couldn't open them I kept getting an error message. oh and just to let you know, I can run the mission in the game, however the trouble I am having is in Mission designer, I can't open my saved file. Maybe its my computer thats incompatible i don't know.

Hello fellow Modders,
I need some assistance, Im having an issue with fred Mission designer, I currently following the full walkthrough tutorial on creating a Mission. Everything was going fine until i got up to the part where I have to add four Heavy raiders to the mission. Now I can't Open the saved File so I can finish creating the mission. everytime I try to open the saved file in Mission designer, It crashes and a message box comes up saying FRED_2 Open has stopped working. I checked to see if the mission would actually work in game and it does work fine, but I can't open the saved file in Mission designer to finish putting the mission together. Do I need to install freespace in order for it to work properly? I don't know what to do. Im at a loss any help would be greatly appreciated.
attached are the files relatied to this issue.

When you say you get an error message but don't actually post what the error message is, you rob me of the most vital clue possible when it comes to solving the problem.
-
Posting the same tech help thread on two boards is a very bad idea. Which one do you want me to close?
-
you can close this one sorry about that Im new to this
-
I'll just merge them.
Anyway, what was that error message?
-
here they are I save them as image files so you can see exactly what they say I hope this helps.

Did you put the files in your Diaspora folder before running them?
-
yes I did they open fine now However I am still having the issue with this FRED_2 open not working. Do I need to download and install Freespace or something?
-
Do I need to download and install Freespace or something?
No, everything is standalone.
-
I don't understand why Im having this issue with Mission Designer
-
How do I fix this issue so I can creat my own missions?
-
yes I did they open fine now However I am still having the issue with this FRED_2 open not working. Do I need to download and install Freespace or something?
The error message I'm seeing from those new builds is consistent with them not being in your Diaspora folder. I believe I included a new debug version, can you please run that and post the log since I'm still not convinced you've actually installed those builds to the right place.
-
I did Install the files to the Diaspora Folder, here is the FRED_2 open Log file

I've got not idea what to suggest then. I think you'll have to reinstall cause something is corrupt with your install but your actual VPs look fine.
-
OK one other question for you, should I adjust my settings on my Operating system settings on my lap top would that help if so, what setting on my OS would I have to adjust?
-
To be honest, I have no idea what is causing your issue. It seems to be something related to your system but I have no idea what it could possibly be.
-
I remember in a previous post you told me to disable the post processing in the advanced settings however I looked in the troubleshooting section and I didn't see it there all I saw was a button to Enable post processing but not to disable it.
-
You want to disable shaders and make sure post processing is disabled. I guess I didn't make that clear.
-
all I saw was a button to Enable post processing but not to disable it.
That line in the feature list has a checkbox next to it. Unchecking it will disable postprocessing.
-
I looked In the advanced settings and I didn't see the disable post processing option does the fact that I have windows 7 with intel processor have anything to do with it?
-

No, but read what The_E told you again. Under "Advanced Settings", there is a checkbox that says "Enable post processing". If the box is checked, post processing is enabled. If it isn't, it's disabled, so what you want to do is make sure the checkbox next to "enable post processing" is unchecked. You are not looking for a separate option called "disable post processing", there isn't one.
-
I did a troubleshoot of tha program and I got a message saying the Aplication is incompatible with windows. how do i make mission designer comatible with my OS?
-
Yea, ignore that, the message is pretty much wrong. It works on Windows just fine. Did you try to uncheck "enable post processing"?
-
Yes I unchecked enable post processing and I disabled all shaders. But every time I try to open the saved file in Fred It keeps crashing and I get that same message saying Fred_2 open has stopped working and has to close. This started happening once I added the four heavy raiders the mission.
-
I can also open your mission file just fine. This is somewhat bizzare. Not that it's likely to help, but what are your system specs and exact Windows version?
-
here are my specs for my computer: My Operating system is Windows 7
OpenGL Vendor : Intel
OpenGL Renderer : Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
OpenGL Version : 2.1.0 - Build 8.15.10.1883
-
That tells us that you have an Intel graphics card, which isn't really supported (but people did get the game to run with it by disabling shaders - FRED crashing is a new one, though). It doesn't tell us the amount of RAM and CPU, though that's probably not that relevant right now. That's a laptop, right?
-
yes this is a lap top
-
Best guess, your intel card borrows RAM to act as video memory. Then when you add too much stuff into the mission, it runs out and crashes. But it's really just a wild guess, and no idea on how to fix it.
-
can I free up my ram space? would that make a difference?
-
OK I fix the problem Fred is working Properly now. I have one other question, Is there a way I can add a voice over in the command breifing and Debriefing editors as I creat my mission?
-
You need to record the voice and save it in .ogg or .wav format. Then simply use the option in the relevant editor to add the sound.
The other choice is to use the voice synthesis option. It's not as good as a proper voice-acted part but it is probably better during development than trying to read all your messages.
-
Out of curiosity, what did you do to fix the issue?
-
How do I record and save a voice? can I use the voice acting that is in the game? or would I have to record my own voice?. and what I did to fix the issue is when I loaded fred I turn off show ship models.
-
Definitely sounds like you were running out of video memory to display it all. Glad it's fixed though.
-
How do I record a voice for the Breifing sections?
-
You need a microphone and something to record with. Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) is pretty reasonable.
-
I ran into another snag yet again, when I whent to save the mission in Fred_2 i got a assertion faliure message I don't know what that means. attached is the Fred_2 open log file and my bsg mission file, can you tell me if I made a mistake somewhere in the events editor or something?.
-
You have two variables with the exact same name.
$Variables:
(
0 "Jump-Countdown" "60" "number"
1 "Jump-Countdown" "60" "number"
)
Not sure why that would cause that assertion, but I doubt it's a good idea at all to do that. Delete one of them in notepad. And don't use the debug version of FRED except when you have bugs.
-
I think I made another mistake, Im not sure how to fix it. see the attached file
[attachment deleted by a basterd]
-
You really need to tell us what's wrong.
-
I deleted finall Countdown 60 but when I try to open the file I keep getting that same assertion failure mesage.
