This is awesome and ethically laudable. Research on artificial locomotion will go a long way towards helping the disabled and producing search and rescue machines that can save a lot of lives.

Wait, I forgot, nerds need to have some kind of Terminator freakout, right

its not really the ai im worried about. its the people who will use that ai to enslave humanity that i worry about.

that is amazing stuff, we definitely seem to be heading quickly into a robotic age (hopefully more like Asimov's I-Robot than terminator) perhaps 10-20 years ish? before we see serious use in military and large corporate usage

Heh, I read the thread title as DERP at first glance. But yeah, that is pretty cool what they've got. I can see it being the predecessor of cave rescue/exploration robots.

They've also set up a Virtual Robotics Challenge (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/120363-DARPA-Welcomes-Virtual-Robots-to-Robotics-Challenge) for any coders that want to take a stab at AI.

Hang on... a robot ninja? I'm reminded of an episode (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Enter_the_Nightbird) of Transformers - better hope this stays out of the hands of evil robots from another planet. :p

Ah, why build a robot ninja, doctor? Isn't that rather dangerous?"

One time at darpa:

"We finished our Ninja robot!"
"No, it's not finished yet!"
"What you mean? Not finished? It can walk right?"
"Yeah but without blue pulsing magic LEDs it will never work!!!"

I think this demonstrates quite well how technology can be a double-edged sword, being either beneficial or harmful depending on how it is used.
