Title: Question about Ship tbl and tbm.
Post by: starbug on October 31, 2012, 11:35:41 am
Ok i am not sure if this should be here in the or in the Blue Planet forum. I am working on a small campaign that is going to take place in the BP, i am goin to focus on the UEF side, but i am wanting to include another race. So how many Ship enteries can FS now handle? The way i have my mod ini setup is secondarylist = blueplanet,blueplanet2,mediavps_3612; Now i don't want to use any GTVA/shivan ships apart from maybe the Fenris and leviathan. Would it simple require me make a tbl file with just the ships i wanted or would the GTVA/shivan ships still show up from the other mod folders?

(i hope that makes sense)

Yes, the GTVA/Shivan ships will still show up (I dont think creating a new .tbl would prevent this, but why bother?). As for creating a new species, you'd have to create a species.tbm (iirc?)

Unless you're going to be using a lot of new/other ships, it wouldn't be worth it to get rid of the unneeded canon ships from the tables. As for adding a new species, I think that's the species attributes (or something) table. Might be the species.tbm.

If you create a ship table it will replace the ship table in BP.  The only ships that will show up are the ones you put in your ship table.
If you use a tbm it will add to or change the existing table.

Though I'm not sure about how to do a tbm for it, the table for new species is species_defs.tbl (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Species_defs.tbl). However if you define a new species you need to add briefing icons, flyby sounds and debris field definitions (they can be copies of the original species, but they must be defined).

You don't strictly have to add a new species to species.defs, though. For example, the Vishnan ships are defined as Vasudan. If one of the other species has similar characteristics (such as thruster glows - though I think those can be defined on a ship-to-ship basis), you could simply assign them to one of the existing species.

It's less work to just make a new species than to add flyby sounds, alternate thrusters, etc to every single ship they have if you have a number of them.
This is assuming you know what you're doing.

Vishnan ships should probably get their own species eventually.

Well since the story i am working just focus's on a alternate UEF,  i was planning just to have the new species just be classed as either vasudan or Shivan, not really fussed about flyby sounds or thruster glows at the moment.

War with the Vishnans for BP3 confirmed.

That or they want to clear some space in the Vasudan list for nugen Zod fleet, which is more likely.
