Title: New games on elderly PCs!
Post by: Petrarch of the VBB on June 19, 2002, 12:46:32 pm
As is now well recorded, I am in a state of flux as my decent gaming machine is stuck in a warehouse some where. I am, therefore having to play games an a rather decrepit old Cyrix 133!

For a while a i played only old games liek Transport Tycoon, but then I had a thought... FREESPACE!
So I installed it, and ran it, it was amazing!
I had to turn all the detail levels down to the bottom, but it ran, ships turned into triangles when only 50 metres away, but it ran!
Believe me, you haven't lived until you've played FS1 on a machine with the following:
Cyrix 133
32Meg Ram
SiS 6326 8meg "3d" Card
1.5 gig drive
and no joystick!

How is it physically possible to play FS2 without a joystick? Oh yeah, you play on Very Easy with the god mode on :)

Not really Virtu... i've beaten insane with my trusty mouse... it's difficult, but it works.  My joystick never worked for Freespace or Freespace 2, so i've been stuck with my good 'ol mouse...

Keyboard only?!? HOW?

Anyway, has anyone noticed how handle twist never works for more than a month or two, Windows always buggers it up, and your ship starts spinning wildly.
Another thing, whenever I install that Logitech Wingman manager thingy, my sound card stops working, neat huh?

Amen to that. The only games I use any other peripherals with are Quake 3 (mouse+key) and Tachyon (mouse+key as much as possible).

Keyboard is cool...
But at "MS Combat FS" joy' is the best... It's so hard on keyboard... and all Flight sims are also the best on joy... al exept FS... FS is unplayeble with joystick i have... but i played on expencive one(that works ok, but it needs lots of buttons and force feedback)

uh playing with a Joystick is harder than a mouse! A mouse is more accurate.

but how do you evade? dodge missiles, fire, beams... you cant do that with a stupid little mouse... and my aim is godly on a joystick anyways.

I guess you just need to know how to handle your stick

hehe ;)

In my opinion the Joystick is more versatile - it can actually steer (which I can't with a mouse) and I can actually aim, which I also can't with a  mouse... Anyway, my joystick can basically operate all the FS2 functions just on the stick and throttle.

It all depends on what your use to. Speaking as a man whose completed FS ST and FS2 on medium using solely keys (and without the cheats!) it si indeed possible to play without a joystick. If fact I'll personally hopeless in FS with jokstick and would probably get massacred if I ever did multiplayer.

And just a minor add on, the standard keyboard setting for FS in not that good (read:very bad). Change it! I own setting are:
One hand does 'left', 'right' and secondary fire, right does 'up' and 'down' and primary fire etc etc.

I am also a keyboard-only person and have changed around the key mappings to something I have used from the Descent days. I can beat the campaign on insane but probably would be unable to get past the first or second mission on very easy with a mouse, joystick or even a different set of keys. :p :D

The weird thing is, btw, that I use joystick with every other flight/SC simulator I have (TIE Fighter, XWA, etc.). Somehow, I can't aim with it only in FS.

I can't play it unless I'm using a stick. Having flown an actual aircraft myself, and with the general movement (albeit with dodgy physics) of the fighter behaves in the same way, I'm used to the stick.

I still love 'pouncing!' :D:D:D

Bah, I tried to play System Shock (1&2) on my machine but SSHOCK 1 wouldn't see my soundcard and wouldn't run, and SSHOCK 2 just wouldn't install even when i hacked the setup binary to bits.

Bloody EA and their lack of future proofing.

win2k with an sblive.  bleurgh.

I use the mouse, but it gets a bit annoying when you have to keep moving it halfway across your desk just to trun an Ursa through 90 degrees!

The way it was done in Privateer 2 was better, the mouse worked just like a joystick! Annoying when you lost the centre position, though.

SS2, you say? Hmm. you know I can't play that game for above twenty minutes at a time.

A) Because it scares the hell out of me

and B) Because I'm crap at it.

You can hear them, but you don't know where they are!
"your flesh betrayyyys you!"
"The horror, the horrorrrrrr"

And those bloody pyro-monkeys, aahhgg.

This is strange.  With the sensitivity turned all the way up I have no problem driving an Ursa(still the best Terran bomber:snipe: ).  As far as having to move half-way across the desk, just pick it up:doh:.  I've pickoff Dragon's using my KB & MS.

Oh and as far as "Steering"(keeping yourself upright with the rest of the game, just bind a key to the "Bank when pressed" function.

True.  However I was feeling a little metaphysical when I wrote that, so a more appropriate answer would be...love, sadness, hate, ect.

I just can't seem to pilot on cheap joysticks or keyboards. Only semi-cheap joysticks....
