Title: FRUSTRATING BS FROM FRED
Post by: BritishShivans on November 29, 2012, 09:29:05 pm
Okay, this is really starting to piss me off. I'm messing around with a tbl. mod intended to rebalance the Shivan weapons and fighters (to make their fighter primaries/secondaries ACTUALLY threatening), but FRED keeps bull****ting.

For instance, I gave Shivan ships and guns the player-allowed flag so I could do balance testing. I have a SF Dragon set up as the player ship. However, FRED kept shoving me into a SF Mara (Terrans) until a ticked it off in the loadout editor. Once I fixed this, FRED started shoving me into a Dragon with NO guns, even though that shouldn't matter (i.e I gave the guns player-allowed flags, and thus didn't need to use force-loadout.)

This is annoying, because while FRED does this properly, when I open the mission up in the Tech Room, the game just  does what it did above. This is also baffling, because I've set up everything right in order to let the player use Shivan ships and primaries, yet the game throws a hissy fit to spite me. It even worked before - I could use Shivan primaries and FRED wouldn't whine about them.

Unless this is because I'm still using 3.6.12, and this a bug in that build. I don't want to be forced to update because of annoying/stupid/silly stuff, mainly because I plan to upgrade to 3.6.14 after I get my new computer. So, I decided to just do tbl. modding and FREDding for now, because it would be easy to bring it over to 3.6.14

It's just that this is incredibly BOTH stupid and annoying, because again, I've done everything right to get the stuff working. I know this from checking the wiki and making sure to copy the format of player-flyable ships, and I already went through the trial-and-error stage.

I just don't know what the hell is causing this. It is again, stupid. I hope this isn't a 3.6.12-related bug.

Chill out a bit. You are probably just doing something simple wrong. Post the mission/table?

Alright. Don't expect the mission to be too-complex: I mostly just set it up as a fun thing, so it's very basic. I also messed around with making the retail ships more powerful, mostly for balancing purposes: When I first edited the Shivan's stuff, they were a bit overpowered, so I made most of the ships more maneuverable and quicker so they wouldn't die very quickly, because that's what happened before I made the changes. Also, I made most of the weapons travel faster and more damaging, although I'm still messing with that.

Try create a new pilot.  Messing with tables can corrupt them.

I wondered about that, actually. I'll make a new pilot. See if that's the case.

When having loadout issues, step #1 should always be to check pilot corruption. If in a campaign, step #2 would be to check if everything has been unlocked in the campaign progression.

Pilot corruption was not the case. Don't know what's going on here, guys. Weird.

I'll set that up. I don't remember how to set up the log, but here's my fs2_open log. Please don't whinge at me about having Freespace 2 under GOG.com. It's worked fine from the time I installed FS2. I probably don't need to move it.

"Probably", he says.

Well, that's why I said "probably". I have the feeling I might need to reinstall FS2 at some point and move the stuff in it to C. Although I was gonna do that anyway once I got my new computer. So it's kinda "ehh" in my mind.

But anyway, have you found anything off?

The SF Dragon in that table, while having the "player_ship" flag, doesn't have allowed primary or secondary banks defined, just default.  Player ships need that information, if I'm not mistaken.  Maybe that's why the game is freaking out with the weapons?

I tried doing that, but I messed up and had to replace it with the backup tbl. I think I might try again later. I'm honestly sick and tired of this constant barrage of BS, which quite frankly shouldn't be happening.

Bull**** is most often on the modder side, not on the engine side. If you think it shouldn't be happening, then you know who to blame.

Everything in FreeSpace modding is frustrating bull**** until you understand it. Then it becomes easy second nature.
