Title: Recommend Me Books!
Post by: SpardaSon21 on December 15, 2012, 11:53:05 pm
I'm flying cross-country out to Florida on Wednesday, and I need book options to keep me occupied on the plane ride and while I wait in the airport, and yes I'll be flying back but not for a week. :p  Any good sci-fi, cyberpunk, or fantasy choices I should buy before I leave?

Please don't mention J. R. R. Tolkein, George R. R. Martin, Starship Troopers, or Honor Harrington, okay? :p

Have you read Dune yet? It's standard sci-fi material for all nerds to read and contemplate upon at one point or other.

Orson Scott Card - Ender's Game & Speaker for the Dead. If you haven't read them, you probably should.

BOLO! and Old Soldiers, both by David Weber (it's not Harrington, it counts!).

Actually, any of the Bolo series.

Echoing the recommendation for Dune. On another note, Wheel of Time is an excellent take on the epic-length fantasy genre. (Don't feel like elaborating right now)

The Belgariad series by David Eddings isn't bad either if your looking for some decent non-Tolkien fantasy.

Elantris was a cool little fantasy novel I stumbled across.  And it's actually stand-alone, shockingly!

I respectfully disagree with this as a recommendation for a plane trip. The series is too ...crufty... to take on in a single-sitting type situation. A plane trip would be better served by something more episodic or one-offish, like the (occasionally bumpy but quite enjoyable) opening books of Jim Butchers' Dresden Files (urban fantasy, think painfully-out-of-his-depth-junior-Gandalf-meets-Sam-Spade) series or most of the early Vorkosigan 'verse books by Lois Bujold - I recommend Falling Free, a stand-alone book that deals with human genetic engineering and has a nice JohnCampbellian "Heroic Engineer" archetype character, and/or The Warrior's Apprentice, (available in the "Young Miles" paperback omnibus) an amusing take on the classic story of the Sorcerer's Apprentice (First there's one broom, then there're three, then there're ten, then there's a spaceship full of 'em...), or the pair of relatively short novels that make up the "Cordelia's Honor" paperback omnibus, a chronologically earlier work that (imho) fits best thematically as bookends around 'Warriors' Apprentice'.

TL;DR
Jim Butcher: 3 contemporary fantasy books, ~300 pages each: Storm Front, Fool Moon, Grave Peril
Lois Bujold: 4 space-opera sci-fi books, between 300 and 400 pages each: Falling Free, The Warriors' Apprentice (paperback omnibus 'Young Miles), Shards of Honor, Barrayar (both in 'Cordelia's Honor' paperback omnibus)

Mm. Didn't see the bit about a plane trip at first. Agreed- probably not the best choice for a domestic flight, but still a really good series.

I enjoyed reading the Wing Commander novels, especially End Run and Fleet Action.
I also recommend Timothy Zahn's Star Wars novels, especially the Thrawn Trilogy and the Star Trek: DS9 Millenium Trilogy by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stephens.

Have you read Alastair Reynolds? Is rather niec. Quite a few standalone books. Pushing Ice, for example.

Personally, I would recommend the following:

-Player of Games, by Iain M Banks
The perfect entry drug into the Culture series.
-Leviathan Wakes, by James SA Corey
A rather intriguing mashup between a mundane space opera and a noir detective story.
-REAMDE, by Neal Stephenson
Hackers and gold farmers and russian gangsters and MMORPGs
-Accelerando, Glasshouse, Singularity Sky by Charles Stross
Rather fun reading, with added singularity exploration
-The Atrocity Archives, The Jennifer Morgue, The Fuller Memorandum, The Apocalypse Codex by Charles Stross
A mixture of Lovecraft, the BOFH stories, Dilbert, and spy fiction.

Finally, I would also recommend The Quantum Thief and The Fractal Prince, by Hannu Rajaniemi.
It's Arséne Lupin post-singularity, which is fun. Beware however that Rajaniemi absolutely expects you to be able to work out what he's saying without handholding and without a glossary, which makes for challenging, but also rewarding reading.

It's not the genre you were talking about, but the Bourne Series is a good read

I second Dune and Levithan Wakes...

Also, The Chronicles of Solace (The Depths of Time, The Ocean of Years & The Shores of Tomorrow) by Roger MacBride Allen are a good read
Spoiler:
although I found the ending a bit ... awkward - and of course the system of interstellar travel in these books is kinda ... well it involves timetravel

EDIT: Forgot that you are looking for fantasy as well:
If you want a more mature fanatasy series try The Prince of Nothing (The Darkness That Comes Before, The Warrior-Prophet & The Thousandfold Thought) by R. Scott Bakker

Maybe the Game of Thrones series? There's the HBO series in process but a new book came out not all that long ago. They're long but not insane--about 800 pages each.

The Black Company by Glen Cook.

Probably my favourite fantasy series, incredibly influential amongst fantasy writers (Many recent ones acknowledge being inspired by it), but sadly not that well known. I prefer TBC to Lord of the Rings.

Beat me to it. Best book I've ever read so far. I also liked enjoyed Old Man's War.

Also, a classic: Clarke's "Childhood's End". For many years, my favorite.

The Sword Art Online novels are nice, since they're fairly lightweight, especially the first ones at 200/250 pages each.

Also read Downbelow Station. Absolutely one of the finest works of military/political SF/F ever committed.

The Star Diaries and Memoirs of a Space Traveller by Stanislaw Lem. Think Gulliver Travels in space. Also, Tales of Prix the Pilot, from the same author. Amazingly deep, exciting and humorous at the same time. Invincible (also Lem's) might be a good idea if you like mystery with a fair bit of philosophy, but not everybody would find it suitable for a plane trip.

Stanislaw Lem in general is a very good author (one of the few benefits of being a Pole is getting to read his books in original without needing to learn notoriously difficult Polish as a second language), but many of his works might not be suitable for a plane trip. His Master's Voice, for example, is a seemingly dinky book that actually has more "content" than some doorstopper series. Very interesting and satisfying to read, but also very difficult. Same deal with Solaris, though not to this extent.

Lem is super good and was well ahead of Western writers of his time.

Arsene Lupin is the literary prototype for the "Gentleman Thief" character that pops up ever so often.

How about one of the Ciaphas Cain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ciaphas_Cain) novels?  The first six are available as two omnibus editions which also contain the various short stories that have been written so far.  Blackadder meets Flashman in the 40'000th millennium...

Peter Watts - Blindsight (good hard SF is rare)

Travis Walton - Fire in the sky (the book is based on real testimony of alien abduction, is a lot different and much better than the movie)

I've already read an assload of 40k, and all the good stuff by Mitchell and Abnett, so don't recommend any of that.

And no, I haven't read Blindsight.  I read the opening section about a kid who nearly beats someone to death because half of his brain had gotten removed through surgery and his social skills were screwed up because of that and that turned me off.

trust me, read the ciaphas cain novels, they are bloody awesome.

also, as a side note, not mention of Hyperion by Dan Simmons? Tsk, tsk, hlp, tsk, tsk.

Another vote for Dune if you haven't read it.  The first two books are pretty awesome, the third is alright, and I honestly don't know if I'd recommend proceeding much beyond that as it gets much weirder and much less interesting.  The first remains the best of the series.

Fantasy too?

Wicked, by Gregory Maguire.  No, it's nothing like the musical (which is also excellent and well worth seeing).

Absolutely essential. Earthsea is interesting because you get to see her feelings about it develop down the years.

I don't think the shift beginning with Tehanu undermined anything that came before, just showed you the other side of Earthsea that had hitherto been only seen in glimpses. And the emphasis on everyday living going hand-in-hand with dealing with the use of magic and power and the cycle of life and death was there from the beginning. It's why the stories have such power.

(I cannot say enough good things about those books. A Wizard of Earthsea and The Farthest Shore are my two favorite books ever, with Atuan and The Other Wind close behind)

The Annals of the Western Shore are also really good if you want something that isn't any kind of typical fantasy (Voices is right up there with the best she's ever written, and I think the story works better if you read that book first, then read Gifts).

Less of a classic, but 40k has been mentioned, so meh.

The Temeraire series by Naomi Novik is pretty good.  Shortest summary possible is: the Napoleonic War WITH DRAGONS!  That's exactly what it is.  Good if you like the historical period.

There are some elements of it that just don't make sense if you're familiar with the reasons why Europe has almost always been a military powerhouse, but if you can ignore that, the series is worth the time.

Also, having recently read it myself, the Aeneid is good read.  Virgil has a talent for writing battle and action scenes.
