Title: i guess i'm finally getting there
Post by: Stealth on June 21, 2002, 12:19:49 am
Hey,

My website's unfortunately not completely finished yet, but I thought i'd just post this, because it can still be of use to some people, particularly those interested in Freespace 1.

As some of you know, HLP was kind enough to let me be hosted... i've been working on my site, but not everything is completed...
as i finish pages i will post them here (the ones that are useful anyway)

http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/stealth/index.html
is the main page, but it's not that good, and i was just getting a main thing... there's a ton of bugs that need to be tweaked, and a ton of things that are just 'there' and aren't working as they should

http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/stealth/downloads.html

this is the downloads page.  this is 99% completed.
I have, for every download, a download from my server (labeled 'swooh') which is available, well, all the time (for downloads) and an 'alternate' which downloads from 'fileplanet', 'descent manager', 'pxo', or 'volition'...  In the near future I will link every file to all of its mirror sites (namely the four above) or in any case, i'll link every file to all the mirrors it has.

The downloads section has mostly files from Freespace (and Freespace 2) but the 'trailers' section has trailers from Descent 1,2,3, Freespace 1,2 and Freelancer trailers (which are so AWESOME).

I'm hoping to eventually have the most useful Freespace 1 site on HLP, but that will be a few weeks (months!?) so i'm not making any promises right now.

The next page(s) that I need to get done are the tutorials page, (this is top priority... included in this page are going to be most of the questions that are asked by newbies and veterans alike, including 'how do i get a custom pilot picture' for the newbies to 'why do i get a 'failed to connect to server on reliable socket' in multiplayer games' for the more experienced, and i'll even have some .TBL editing, and other tutorials... i'll probably also link to Thunder's rendering tutorials (http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/sot/stutorials.shtml) in there too, and any other good tuturials i can find)
and then the 'information' page, which i hope to have a page that will display all available Freespace products (if a person is 'having trouble' finding Freespace 1/2 games/expansions) of different companies, including Ebay, Amazon, Yahoo, etc... i'm hoping to get a script done that will display the various 'finds' for example in Ebay under the search for 'Descent Freespace'... you get the idea)

Right now these are the pages available:

Downloads (http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/stealth/downloads.html) - various downloads.

About (http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/stealth/about.html) - the site, and about me.

I will add to this list.  Please give me some ideas and/or suggestions.  I will try to update the page with the stuff i've been working on offline every other day.

If you find any dead links please let me know too!  I've done my best to prevent these, but you never know!

Thanks
~Stealth~

EDIT:
Friday and Saturday i won't be able to work on my webpage unfortunately, since I've got my aunt coming today to stay with us, and of course, Minority Report comes out today
w00000t
and tomorrow i'm taking part in a graduation party, so... yeah... :D

Looking good!

I like the design but.....not website music!! Arrrgh!!!

All your low quality MIDI are belong to us! (not that it is a MIDI, but anyway)

Where did those trailers come from, cuz I wasn't aware there even were any?

Anyway, what program did you use to make the website? Dreamweaver? Frontpage? Golive (or whatever it's called)?

Meh, anything other than UltraEdit or HomeSite sucks. :D

Ah, and Flash is not the best option for long texts... Nice design, though. :)

I wonder if any of the more musically gifted of us could do a remix of that Trailer track (with louder, more frenetic drums, bigger bass strings and more sounds over the top) ?

wEvil, it's not MIDI, it's WAV files looping.

Yeah, i thought they would be good, especially the first one, since i had hoped to have lots of other effects and sounds on the site, but since it would be impossible to make the entire website one big SWF (cause i want to display HTML and PHP pages too) i had to make frames, and it's really hard for Flash to pass variables to other SWF files in different frames.

Those trailers, where did they come from?  They're the official (and unofficial) trailers of the Descent games, i got the freelancer ones from HLP freespace downloads section, and the other trailers from their respective sites.

Blitz_Lightning, I don't use anything to make my webpages, just raw HTML in notepad... so it's pretty much trial, save, preview, fix the problems, save, preview, fix, etc. but i like it in a way... also, i have no other alternative, cause i had Front Page, but i lost it when my old computer died last year :( so i'm stuck with notepad and flash :)

Styxx, i just put in the flash in the bottom right because it's not that much text, it's only like 10 KB, but eventually i'll have a script that i can add to, and, well, you know...

wEvil, what trailer track are you talking about?  that would be pretty cool ;)

PhReAk, you're right, i use notepad :)

So i guess i'll take the music off, that seems to be everyone's opinion :)  alrighty!

You did a really nice job with it.  If you want you can always add music to it if you want. I like the first song actually.

lol... gw...I should have just checked the source code. If its short, it'd be notepad. Really stupid, long, slow and clumsy'd be frontpage from MS...:D

New page:
http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/stealth/updatingfreespace.html

To get to it:
1)  www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/stealth/
2)  'Tutorials'

Comment:
This tutorials will be useful, because many newbies don't realize that they're not updated (which this tutorial helps with) and also they wonder why they can't see any multiplayer games, and why people can't see their games (which this tutorial helps explain too)

A very simple tutorial, but I believe many people will be helped :)

Right now i've got all my HTML pages in one directory, but it's getting a little hard to handle, so i think i'm going to make directories for pages with many sub-files, such as tutorials, information, etc.  like a "/tutorials/" folder... much better :D

I'm working on a tutorial for probably the most 'asked' question in Freespace/Freespace 2 multiplayer by newbies:
How do I get a pilot image like you?

:nods: :) ;)
this'll help, in great detail!

Oh, and btw... what programs do most people use to resize images, etc.?  I use Photoshop, and i guess most people do, but is there any other 'major' graphics program that i'm overlooking?

Regards
~Stealth~

but most people use or have access to Photoshop, right?

Does anyone, btw... have a script that would allow users to upload a picture to a certain folder in my website or something like that? i'm no good with that :)

New, and probably going to be the most used tutorial ever:

http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/stealth/pilotimage.html

or you can get to it by:
http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/stealth/
then click 'Tutorials'
then click 'Pilot Image'

The ultimate question in multiplayer by a newbie:  "Hey, nice pilot image... how did you get it?"

:D
