Gerry Anderson, the creator of hit TV shows including Thunderbirds, Stingray and Joe 90, has died at the age of 83.

He also created Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons and his puppet superheroes fired the imaginations of millions of young viewers in the 1960s and '70s.

Thunderbirds, a science-fiction fantasy about a daring rescue squad, ran from 1965 and was his most famous show.

Anderson had suffered from Alzheimer's since 2010 and the disease had worsened in recent months, his son Jamie said.

Jamie Anderson announced the news on his website, saying his father died peacefully in his sleep at noon on Wednesday.

 :(

It says something about how great Thunderbirds was that whenever they'd re-show the episodes on TV it would get a whole new generation of fans. Unlike most of the shows which seem better cause of nostalgia, Thunderbirds was so good that even 40 years later you'd get kids to enjoy it.

I don't think I've ever seen any of his shows, but he left a massive impact on television and sci-fi history.

Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, Stingray and a little Joe 90 made up a good chunk of my childhood TV viewing may the legend rest in peace.

Another great person dead. Maybe that's the end of the world Mayans spoke about. Hopefully, the worlds Gerry created aren't going to end just yet. RIP.

You probably should at the very least check out Thunderbirds. That one holds up pretty well.

How on EARTH have people not seen Thunderbirds? Was quite possibly my favourite show ever, as a child. RIP Gerry Anderson.

Thunderbirds are...gone. :(
