Title: Video Games and TV give you cancer!(oh dear)
Post by: starbug on January 08, 2013, 03:20:24 am
Yip you heard it, on the front page of several papers here in the UK, well in Scotland anyway. Main news of the day is that Video Games and TV give you cancer! I didn t have time to read the article but for gods sake, What has the our crappy goverment and media got against games? Also its just another thing in a long line of activities that now give you cancer! Why don't they just say being alive gives you cancer and be done with it. I really cant wait to look at the evidence they have for this, i have played games for 20 years and i am in perfect health, also never had any violent urges after playing doom etc lol.

they been spewing the TVs irradiate your body line since the late 80s iirc, that where radiation screens for the old CRT monitors came from.

Man, they better start telling people how dangerous Bananas, the couch, the floor, the walls, the wind, the sun, the trees, the animals, and every component of the universe is, since they are almost all partly made of radioactive isotopes!

Wait... Humans are radioactive too! OH MAN, OH GOD, OH MAN, OH GOD, OH GOD, OH MAN OH GOD OH MAN OH GOD! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vHRMeRszw4)

I don't know about government (maybe they suck at gaming :)), but for media, I'm not surprised. You read it in a paper, right? Now, consider that when people watch TV or play games, they have less time to read newspapers. Old media always fought against new media, my guess is that out of fear of being phased out by them.

That's... actually kind of true I think.

I think he's actually kind of aware of that. That's the whole point :)

Guess they talking about this? http://www.computerandvideogames.com/385389/mirror-front-page-attacks-games-for-giving-kids-cancer/

So basically the reasoning is... sitting on your ass for unhealthy amounts of time, increases your cancer risk... duh.

I.e.: With their reasoning reading books and newspapers for prolonged amounts of time  has the same cancer risk as watching TV or playing games. :p

Poor print media... lol.

with a cathode ray tube you essentially are staring straight into an electron beam. thats why the things are so ****ing heavy, because the glass is leaded. i very much doubt that cold cathode florescent backlight in most lcds is very dangerous (and those are being phased out for led backlights).

i think this is just another case of news failing science. correlation is not causation, etc.

scientist: people who play video games have a higher incidence of cancer than those who do not.
reporter: video games cause cancer!

i would actually more or less blame the lifestyle of gamers (little exercise, horrible junk food diet), rather than the games themselves.

Those signs are on everything in California.  It's quite hilarious to walk around as a visitor.  My wife and I once found a wrought-iron fence near Disneyland that causes cancer.

They (have to) put all kinds of stickers on cigarettes over here.

The "Smoking causes impotence" sticker can be really awkward for a guy on a date. :)

I'd imagine that one is much more effective than "Smoking harms others", "Smoking causes death" or the good old "Smoking causes cancer".

Hm, probably all those products have been treated with hexavalent Chromiumsalts to increase corrosion resistance. The signs are right - if you lick or chew regularly on that fence you might get cancer ;)

Edit: Here is the list of things that cause cancer in California (ccC)
http://www.oehha.org/prop65/prop65_list/Newlist.html

Hm, is Captain Obvious the official superhero of California ?
Alcoholic beverages, when associated with alcohol abuse - cause cancer in California...

Don't forget that every supermarket has signs on its front doors that warn us that the store sells products that may cause cancer.  We Californians have blanked those Proposition 69 warnings from our collective visual receptors since they're slapped on everything to the point of annoyance, so nobody pays attention when there really is a dangerous product that actually causes cancer. :P

Arsenic causes cancer? I don't think so. It actually significantly decreases risk of dying of cancer, so to speak. :)

The science wasn't wrong.

It was what the newspapers turned it into that was utter bull****. The paper said that developing an unhealthy habit such as sitting in front of a TV or computer screen for 6-7 hours a day instead of exercising can lead to future problems such as heart disease and cancer. This is nothing that we didn't already know.

To be honest when it comes to the science, the only surprising thing is that we're still paying people to tell us this. But then again I suppose since we don't listen when they do tell us, the data they have to work with never changes.

Let's face it, which one of us isn't wasting a majority of your life sitting in a chair and staring into an LCD screen? :) Internet is too much fun to give up, and you can't really use it while exercising. I'd say that considering everything, it might be easier to cure cancer than to get people to change their lifestyle to something more healthy.

I do NOT waste time in front of my LCD screen! I am thoroughly researching a selection of over seventy games! How dare you say I am wasting my life!

Maybe with mature motion control and VR headsets such as Oculus Rift this sedentary style of playing games will change.

And think about other applications than games...  ;)

Well, I lift weights and play soccer. And I spend every other ounce of free time on the computer.

Hah!

Not yet any mention of the hours spent sitting in front of the computer while at work! That I would consider the greatest health risk.

Lemme see: working with computer causes lower back pains, upper back pains or stiff upper back, stiff back of the neck, problems with wrists and forearms (actually, this is very much work related, I haven't heard of a gamer who would get this), weakens the blood circulation to legs, delayed sleep schedule due to dis-proportionally bright monitor compared to the environment, tired eyes and all other sorts of eye trouble. And that's just for the starters.

I mean, why isn't this stuff already outlawed?

Well, you're right. Maybe it should be. I'd answer in detail, but I've got a few quests to finish in TES: Morrowind. :)

The fact that CRT monitors are basically X-ray tubes has already been said, but I'd like to ask if the causality isn't the other way round in this case:
What do you do when you've got cancer and have to lie in a hospital all day? You play video games (I imagine, never been in that situation myself). There's your correlation.
