Title: What 3D modeler do you use?
Post by: Kopachris on January 08, 2013, 11:24:43 pm
Just curious.  This is specifically what software you use for modeling for FS, if you use something else for other modeling tasks.

Blender 2.49.  when 2.5x was launched it's collada exporter was borked iirc and by the time 2.6x arrived I had lost interest in learning the new interface as I have learned most of the keyboard short cuts I use on a regular and semi-regular basis and 2.49 does what I want it to do.

3dsmax. Thing with most of these "other" selections is that you need to use Blender (to convert) anyway. So they don't really count, IMO :P

Blender 2.6, latest and greatest. The interface didn't change that much from 2.49 (I think 95% of the keyboard shortcuts still work the same), and the Collada exporter is functional again AFAIK.

things like centre to cursor have changes and the space bar command now involves a command search rather than a menu of things to add or edit are the two changes that stand out

The "Add object" menu was moved to Shift-A, which makes waaaay more sense IMO.  (I'll admit I still accidentally hit the space bar sometimes.)

Been using Wings 3d since 2005, when I started modeling.  Blender for the rigging and preparation for import to PCS2.  Recently started learning 3ds max 13.

Wings 1.3.1

I tried a more recent version but went back to 1.3.1 when I discovered they had made an optional feature into on-with-no-way-to-disable  Specifically, "temporary selections"

Oh wow. I think this may be the greatest example of "It's the artist, not the tools," that I've ever seen.

im supprised all the people who still use truespace havent upgraded to the free ts7 yet. granted ts 7 is bloated, compared to the version i used to use (ts6, though many of my early models were made with ts4), and i hated it. ts6 had the uv mapping editor that truespace always lacked (i hated lithunwrap because it made you hop formats which shedded your models), so it was good, and i figured out a technique for proper smooth grouping. unfortunately that was around the time i said "**** it im switching to max", so i never employed those techniques on many of my ts models.

Maya and Max. Nowadays both are free to download from Autodesk, if you use them to the capacity a student would. Which for example is making models for a mod, under the intent to study how to 3d model and apply them within an engine for an interactive graphics platform (Freespace Open). As long as that mod isn't sold or published as stand-alone, it's fine.

I use a 3D modeling program by the name of Nevercenter Silo. I was introduced to it by lead dev of SAFSO Quanto, and I really enjoy how easy it is to use over cumbersome Max and designed-by-aliens Blender.

It's very easy to pick up and very intuitive.  It lacks many of the features of more powerful 3D modelers though.  For instance, good luck trying to create any 3D curve beyond an ellipsoid.  It also lacks any real UV toolset, but Blender provides that.

I'm guessing that some bright spark finally made a sketchup format converter?

/me hasn't used sketchup since the first release when it lacked A LOT MORE output features :nervous:

i find sketchup to be the equivalent of taking a cheesegrater to your face when it comes to modelling. at least for what your typical use in the freespace modding might be :p

sketchup has had dae export for a while

SketchUp's DAE export had compatibility issues with Blender the last time I checked.  I'm not sure if it's still the case, but I think it boiled down to Blender not recognizing certain parts of the DAE file which SketchUp used.  It was fixable by hand if you knew a bit of XML.

I think its something to do with positional data, I have imported several sketchup models into blender 2.49, you get a load of empties which if you delete them it barfs up the positioning of the mesh object attached.  it's resolvable in Blender but its fiddly

Seems to work fine with 2.65.  You'll want to remove doubles after you import it, though.

Yeah, I just tested the new version and it seems to have its own problems, mainly splitting the mesh into several chunks for no apparent reason.

My work bought a 3ds max 2011 license for me to use. I've been using it to build assets for promotional material for my employer, and to mod when I'm at home.

I use Wings3D 1.4.1. It's just awesome, love the intuitive UI setup, it's just regrettable that it's so limited.
