Title: new shockwave effect
Post by: Nighteyes on January 15, 2013, 08:20:05 am
Hi guys, was messing around in after effects and decided I didn't like the current look of our shockwaves, so I decided to make a new one...
*I only made a 3D version
*I can't believe the rotation issue with 3D shockwaves on weapon impacts is still not fixed... :(

enjoy, and tell me what you think and what could be improved :)
someone please upload it to a more permanent download location, since I'll eventually delete it from my dropbox.

What happen for shockwave from multiple missiles/bombs impacts ? It will be weird compare to your Bubble shockwave effect.

I am now using this.

Using some of your older, blue shockwaves for the 2D effect and this fiery one for the 3D effect actually looks surprisingly awesome.

Excellent! I think I still prefer the MVP ones stylistically, but it's always great to have other effects available!

Inorite, I think the coders are conspiring against us >:| (j/k, you guys are awesome)

well I was thinking of redoing the 2D one as well, to something a bit more explosive as opposed to a classic shockwave, I don't know I don't really like it that these days half the screen is spammed with shockwaves, bomb and missile shockwave should probably just be something to enhance the impact effect of the weapon, while when a capship explodes, it will produce the more classic shockwave...
still experimenting will this idea...

I don't know why but i can't make this thing working. I dropped the files into my mediavps effects folder but I can't see it ingame. Previously when i used new waves they were with .eff file. this rar deosn't have it.
What I have to change or put these files?

EDIT:
problem solved. I found the right folder and modified the .eff file. New beautiful shockwave works good  :D

I don't suppose you'd mind helping a modding noob Hornet?  I put these effects into data\effects and renamed the .eff, but that hasn't worked. I assume I'm wrong in either file placement or naming convention.

Uh, this isn't a shockwave. THIS is a shockwave: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwNS7sGW77k

Freon: the files should have a proper EFF file, and should be placed in Maps folder, make sure 3D shockwaves are enabled in the launcher.

Fury: since when is FS realistic in any way? you have military ships with neon lights on them :P
*for more "realistic" shockwaves, the ones I made for Diaspora are kind of like what you posted, I still can't manage to get a 3D sphere pof to work...

Freon. Just do what Nighteyes said ;). everything should be placed in mediavps/maps foder. My problems were caused only by the mess I have made myself. I was using blue 3D waves from ED which I guess had different frame number than these ones.

@realism: That is a shockwave in atmosphere. In vacuum, the only medium to carry the shockwave is the matter released from the bomb and the remains of the target. I have no objection to how this looks :P

Ok here's what I've tried so far.  Put them in mediavps_3612\data\maps, mediavps_3612\maps, and just data\maps outside mediavps.  Oh and I just created an .eff to go with it consistent with the one for normal shockwaves from the effects.vp.   I'm using a really basic FRED 'mission' to test it in a bomber too if that matters.

Sorry if this has been answered somewhere else. I did look and found nothing, so thanks for the help :D

I always felt the Freespace shockwaves were too over-the-top. Maybe something more subtle and fast moving would create a better immersion than slow and big shockwave. For inspiration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cprjF2-WGsk&t=2m4s

There is no part of SoaSE that FS should take inspiration from.

Especially not in the graphics area.

Why? Bailknight's graphics mod is pretty beautiful.

I does have some nice effects here and there, but a bit too shiny and bright for my taste... (speaking the one who just made a super shiny and bright shockwave :P)

well, here is another quick test, this time its a 2D version(2D go in effects folder, 3D into maps)
a more "realistic" look I guess, some might think its plain... will wait for feedback :)

:D
its always better to make things bigger and then scale them down for the "final" version... I'm basically just playing around with these to see if something nice will come out of it
