Title: 0rph3u5 goes abroad... (first stop: London)
Post by: 0rph3u5 on February 02, 2013, 04:11:09 pm
So as those of you who follow my post know I'm in a bit of RL "problem situation" ... 2013 looked very good when it started but that's pretty much over now...

Anyway, since I won't be having any kind of regular day as I had before I decided to make the best of it and finally start travelling around the world like I always planned. This might not be smartest of moves but I'm not known to be a smart person anyway. (It's a "re-taking control of my life"-thing.)

Prologue aside:
Since I never left continental Europe and don't want to strike out very far just yet, my first stop will be London. The trip is still in the planning stages, so I would appricate any and all advice (postive or negative) for planning the trip.

Meet all the London HLP-ers at a pub for drinks.

And some advice from a quite possibly biased American :P: Don't order anything but the fish and chips when you do.  British make very good fish and chips but don't expect an Englishman to cook anything else well. ;)

My advice? Don't go to London, except to meet HLPers, it's the worst city in Britain. (Of course, I guess it's probably okay if you're playing Tourist)

Well someone has obviously never been to Birmingham!

....Or Liverpool.

....Or Manchester.

....Or Leeds.

....Or Hull.

....Or Glasgow.

....Or Liverpool.

(I could go on like this for hours. :p )

With the exception of Birmingham, those are all better than London.

You could just forget all about those grimy cities and come and enjoy the beauty of the Lake District...  :D

If you want to tell me that London might be the uggliest city I will ever see: Go to Frankfurt am Main and then we talk again (it's concrete-and-glass-born ode to sqaure spaces and cubic buildings)

Date is set and my travel-papers are in order (except for my drivers licence - my not paying what they charge to make it valid in the UK) - so, can we now get into some must-see details, please? Or do I have to resort to actually getting a tourist's guide book...

Here's a video I remember finding some years ago. I'm sure others can talk about the main attractions in London. Here's some things that are a little more unusual, with plenty of street level driving footage too...

And I see from the sidebar he made another video that I haven't seen. I have no idea what to expect from this one:

I'm sure the sidebar can send you off to other videos as well.

Forget about London, go to New York!

Because that's totally in the same ballpark in terms of financing the trip.

To be fair, he says he's going to travel around the World, this is just the first stop, so I doubt money is an issue for him.

Was going to post this last night but some moron decided to have a go at hacking the site

+1 to who ever mentioned the Lake District.

Sheffield is not a bad base if you want to spend some time in the middle of England with a number of touristy places near by and Leeds (which is home to several attractions of it's own) within reasonable travel time and several major Airports within reasonable distance, the down side would be that Sheffield to London is a bit of a trek.

I would also suggest a day or two in and around Wales, they have some spectacular views around there, just watch the weather if you planning on going up the peaks.  If you are out that way then a hop across to Ireland might be worth your time as well.

Scotland also holds it's own for attractions, (The Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a particular interest of mine that I would love to go to see).  The only thing I will say about Scotland is pick your time of year, it's far enough north that the weather can be interesting at the wrong times.

Money is an issue but none I can resolve with suffient time (I guess that goes for all of us :) )

Only unresolved issue right now is, am I meeting people from HLP while I'm there?

*snip*

Everything noted for future planning

You don't want to be going on a World tour then. Unless you're meaning in small doses over the years.

That was the plan (not sure what the plan is anymore)

*sigh* Obligations, obligations everywhere... (don't mind the egocentric display of melancholy and depression, those have always been there)

Ah. Usually, when someone says World tour, you imagine them jetting all over the place all at once.

I'm not sure if London is the best place to go if you want to cheer up. But it depends what cheers you up I suppose, you must have had your reasons for choosing it, and it has plenty to offer to tourists. A dense city would not be where I'd want to be though if I was needing to get away from the obligations of life.

when someone says World tour

And I never said World tour...

And my reasoning is very sound and sane, just look in the first post ;)
