Title: Eris Station
Post by: SF-Junky on February 10, 2013, 06:19:38 am
Hey there.

I just realized you changed the Eris station model in Deals in Shadows to an ordinary Bretonia-class base. First, why was that? And second, what was the old model? Can it still be found for dl anywhere and is it free to use?

Plus: I always wondered why anyone would build a "trading station" that far out in the Kuiper Belt? Whith whom did the Jovian Systems Republic trade out there? What is the story behind Eris Station? :)

iirc the old model was nothing but the Luna-base model  :P. And since they updated all the Luna City models, Im guessing they replaced it with the Bretonia model

The GEF, obviously. They aren't self-sufficient enough to cut themselves off from the inner Solar System, and there's a somewhat steady stream of people joining them all the time. They basically trade their skills in environmental design, medicine and stuff for raw materials and stuff they cannot manufacture themselves.

It definitely wasn't.  It had a completely separate model from the old luna city.  I checked.

The old Luna Dome is still ingame, btw.  The old spaceport is not.

Why would they trade with a faction hostile to them?

As for the model: The old one was defenitely not Luna dome. It was a unique model that was used nowhere else in the mod.

You treat the GEF as a coherent, single faction. They are not.

Wow...that sounded very Shivan! (Try reading that in a Shivan voice) and creepy... :shaking:

As for the GEF; as The E said, they aren't a coherent single faction, hell, as far as we know the Kostadin cell were the most hostile, while the rest of the Gef cells are mostly peace-loving trans-humanists.

Could it be by any chance a station from X3? IIRC[not sure though] BP tried to rip few ships from X at some point.

They had winnowed all futures. The raid endured. It was optimal. It was necessary. Would that mean they also use Neologispeak?  :p

Green Fly and whatsitsname also attacked the Federation. According to Thorn (I think.)

And about the old fort, it was just the pieces of Luna Base mixed with some other, unused, buildings.

BP used X3 ships that we had permission to use, there are still a few left (Cadius' stuff). As for this station I honestly just remember it being one of the Luna City buildings, but maybe I'm wrong.

i read that on the forums, but in-game it didn't look like it could be any of the luna models.  for what it's worth, i think the old station looked much more awesome.

It was definitely a different model.  Recall that there were 10 cylindrical substructures emanating out from the main structure.  I seem to remember the silhouette making it look a lot bigger than it actually was...

I think it makes a lot more sense this way, because it made no sense to me that the Jovians abandoned what appeared to be a bloody massive space station which also wasn't being used by the tevs.  Now its just some small worthless 'obscure' as it was put, outpost.

but it still looked cooler.  :P

and as a half-assed argument for keeping the giant, cool-looking model, the fact that it was a unique model not seen before and not used elsewhere adds to the obscurity of the station.
or something.  :nervous:  yeah.

That model along with a whole bunch of other lunary buildings got axed to free up ship table entries when we started hitting the limit (which is why there's only three or four towers instead of seven). Feel free to use it but to be honest the ugly thing shouldn't have made it in the mod to start with (it was originally going to be a spaceport for Luna before getting replaced).

yeah, i'd guessed there was some tech reason it was gone.  it didn't look ugly though.  at least in the dark and far away.

Well yeah, the silhouette effect was a lot of what made it look so good in that mission.  Actually it probably would have looked decent in the light if it had decent textures...

Yeah, its time to bump the INF limits again and call the new builds BP  Ships.tbl limit becomes an issue way too often.

I'd really like to, but I need to know how the model ist called and where I can get it. That's why I opened this thread. ;)

Oh, and there are still tbl limits? wtf? :nervous:

I thought Inferno builds got rid of those... :wtf:

no - just increased them.  Not by enough it seems... :)
Title: Re: Eris Station

No. Inferno builds have expanded limits, not no limits. Most of the time, you're never ever going to hit them; We hit them during development at some points because we had a ton of experimental and in-development stuff in our tables.

EDIT: And because we want to keep everything compatible (I.E. Make it possible for someone with WiH installed to play AoA while WiH is selected as the active mod), we're culling stuff from our tables ruthlessly. Every slot we use for some building that is only going to appear once is a slot we can't use for a ship.

This is a worrying prospect for someone who uses modular stuff... :nervous:

Don't get me wrong, those limits are going to go away at some point, it's just that that's a task that isn't exactly risk-free. So it's not going to happen soon.

What is the exact limit, actually?

250 I believe
Title: Re: Eris Station
Post by: niffiwan on February 11, 2013, 03:35:15 pm
Yep - and the technical reason for the limit is that ships are all stored in a fixed size array.  Converting the array to something like an STL Vector would remove the limit, but as The E says, it's not exactly a risk-free change.

just out of curiosity, how risky is upping the count again in the meantime?
Title: Re: Eris Station
Post by: niffiwan on February 11, 2013, 08:05:20 pm
presumably since it's been done before, it's not that risky.  However, I've never investigated it to be sure.

Do you also have the textures? Respectively, from what models are they? capital11-01a and raytile?

You can probably find them in the BP modpack.
