So I recently have come back to the FS universe after being reminded of the game the other week. I've followed the instructions here:
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=78710.0
and here
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83577.0
But my issue is when I try to launch FSO from wxLauncher, I get an 'Unable to get proper pixel format for OpenGL W32' from windows, then this debug from the launcher:
Unable to initialize display device!
ntdll.dll! NtWaitForSingleObject + 12 bytes
KERNELBASE.dll! WaitForSingleObject + 18 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_16_NO-SSE.exe! <no symbol>
fs2_open_3_6_16_NO-SSE.exe! <no symbol>
fs2_open_3_6_16_NO-SSE.exe! <no symbol>
I've tried non-SSE and SSE2 FSO. FS2 runs fine as a clean install from GOG after an auto compatibility fix from Win8. I'm running Win8 on a partitioned Imac i5 with Intel chip and AMD Radeon HD6700M series graphics card.
Any suggestions?

Please generate a debug log by following these instructions (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=56279.msg1180359#msg1180359).
I'd also suggest making sure your video drivers are up to date, but I don't think you can update Windows video drivers if you're using a Mac. I think you just have to use whatever Apple provides.
-
Here you go.
Yeah, Apple haven't released updated drivers for Win8 as yet. If this is problem I guess I'll just have to wait.
Let me know if there's anything I can try.

Hm, not sure what to tell you. Maybe someone else will have another idea.
How about running FSO within OS X instead of Windows? Take a look at these instructions (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=79546.0). You can just copy over your installation from Windows to your OS X Applications folder, then get the OS X build of FSO (available in the same 3.6.16 release thread where you found the Windows build) and wxLauncher.

Thanks I'll give that a go tonight.

If you have issues, have a look at this thread as I am running it on an iMac i5 processor system and it took a slightly different build to get around some of the graphical issues. With the build though, its perfect :)

I had missing graphics where the exhaust flames should be and thats apparently down to something I don't fully understand

Although I'm glad you like the build, GrahamO, it's only needed to play the Blue Planet mods. BP is designed to work with a special experimental build that uses cutting-edge features. The build I provided is a compatibility build for BP OS X players. For FS2 retail and all other FS2 mods, though, you should use the standard OS X builds, such as the official builds and the nightly builds (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=173.0). Using a recent nightly build is recommended for now, because 3.6.16 has a difficulty bug that was fixed in nightly builds.
I can't help you much with the graphics, though. Although if you're still using the unofficial BP build, switch to the compatibility build. See here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83318.msg1669065#msg1669065).
EDIT: Clarification.
