I don't think it's a particularly new way of thinking about it. I've been hearing pretty much the same thing for years. In fact, this is the first time I've heard the "We domesticated wolf puppies" theory.
If I remember the fox experiment correctly, it took 7 generations of selectively breeding the most docile foxes to domesticate them. Somehow I doubt that a tribesman is going to put up with wolf cubs that might occasionally flip out and decide to murder him and his family for that long. :p
