Title: In Atmosphere - I need some help :o)
Post by: CptWhite on June 13, 2001, 03:24:00 pm
Hi everyone im trying to make an in-atmosphere environment for the mod but I'm running into difficulties.  I need to thin out the nebula so not as many poof clouds appear and  also increase the visible distance that you can see (by around 10-12 times more than current distance)  I dont know how to go about this as i cant find any helpful variables in the tbl.  At least not yet.  So I'm throwing it to the public - can you help me?

Anyways here are some of my early shots:

Wow, is that a mountain those last few shots?  It looks   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/cool.gif)

You might be able to modify the nebula poofs to be more transparent.  I don't know anything about the table file that controls the nebulas, but you might find some things there too.

That's a sweet looking ship too.  What species?

My god! Have you people never watched Babylon 5?

That's a Centauri Sentri-fighter. Really manouverable but crap armour  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I think someone made an atmosphere mod sometime. Max?

the atmosphere mod is in the robotech campaign, but there's no more view range than yours  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif). Maybe if you put black areas in it, all the black areas shouls be perfect transparency? not sure but worth a try.
Title: In Atmosphere - I need some help :o)
Post by: Jabu on June 13, 2001, 04:28:00 pm
Pure green is transparent in FS2, but I don't know if that applies to nebulae. Black would probably just make it really dark   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Hey, if that happened to the Netherlands last week, I'm dead and you're all just imagining this  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/tongue.gif)

i'll be modeling a dust-ball for us to mass driver bombard  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) [actually i already have an earth - model with a hella nice texture that gets ruined by being scaled down to game size]  the only problem is fs2 itself doesn't like the planet to scale.. fred2 can handle it...

Im putting this mini-project on hold for a while now

I dont *need* to have an atmosphere - that was just a nice touch...the main idea was to be in orbit of earth...something i can achieve with just the model in space..but it looks a bit naff around the edges.....ive been thinking about how to go about simulating an atmosphere around the edge of the planet - something i now think i can do - when i can be bothered -  but it involves individually creating 40 texture maps which is a BIG pain in the ***  and ive just had enough of it for now.  It also requires some modification on the model im using - its all possible to simulate fairly effectively a near earth situation now.  Note this IS a simulation - if you want, you can just fly closer and closer and closer until you crash into the surface of the model (it'll be about 10,000 m away) but you wont be able to get around the back of the model - the game court marshals you first - yes the planet surface really is HUGE - i think its 200km in diameter - i have a 850 processor and a TNT2 graphics card and it runs fine....

Textures need doing again anyway cos theyre slightly flawed.

So back to texturing the regular ships for now.  I would definately like to further this an some point though.....For the final fight during the civil war...this would look ACE for then....anyways thanksyou to anyone who gave me suggestions and praise  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I'm a Trekkie/Star Wars fan, not B5, even though the 2 episodes I've seen were fairly good.  I made that assumption from the shiel icon in the HUD. Wasn't thinking that it might be a completely different ship w/o the shield icon change. Sorry. And I'd recognize any Enterprise except perhaps the C.

I have thought of a way to simulate my effect anyway although implementation has not been done.  I'll keep ya posted on this as i make it

Well these are just alpha shots - blending between atmosphere and planet edge is going to be done as well as some clouds possibly painted on the sky - they may look too pixelly i need to test this - but anyway i can simulate an in-atmosphere environment now with a good visiblity.

That was my thought at first too- but then why can you see the sun? FS2 has no translucent textures except in nebulas.

Confirms that idea: the darker the colour, the ùore transparent the map is (as -Bobboau I think- make me noticed when talking about explosion and shockwave anis).

Ok everyone can have a fly around now

Its fairly memory intensive

 http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/babylon/mod/skullar%20cptwhite/earth_atm.rar ("http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/babylon/mod/skullar%20cptwhite/earth_atm.rar")

If you want my backgrounds you will need these: NOTE: it completely replaces the normal backgrounds

For the star fury you will need to wait for the demo (officially) anyway have fun - i included a setup mission for you to fly about in - i took the pictures with the mission.  You need to setup your own tbl as i havent done this -  i just used the sathanas tbl entry for this pics.

that's trully awesome, doesn't look like it's FS2 anymore! Btw, when I'll have some time, I just decided that I MAY make a new lod for the actual FS ships (LOD-1 we could call it), for the big PC of course (I plan to have the fighter use up to 800 poly, plus 512*512 maps)

Another good idea for this excellent mod would be to make textures of anothe planet in the other side... that way we would have two planets in one model!

No, I'm using Netscape. Besides, same thing happens in Internet Exploder.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Awesome stuff!  Has anyone changed the textures on this thing yet?  I'd like to have a generic planet that I could fight around, what would be the best way I could go about changing the textures on this?

Anyone out there have the atmosphere effect? I really don't want to download 10 MB from the Robotech site or whatever the core files are at TBP...

Haven't downloaded it, but it sounds VERY interesting.
I wonder what would happen if you put in a FRED sexp to make it self destruct... :drevil:

The reason I was asking is because the link in this thread asks for a password.

What I meant is I have a crappy 56k. MY computer takes around 2 hours to download 10 MB if I'm doing anything else, not to even mention trying to download TBP...

this topic is WAY old

true atmosphere is not practical without scode code modifications

but its nearly within gasp if you use a generic land as base...ie desert, grass, rubble ...etc ...possibly limited detail but basically it cant be satisfactorily done without modification on the code.

though the modification would be very easy as it would be just changing existing values
