Title: Silly question
Post by: TrashMan on March 22, 2013, 08:44:15 am
I'm gonna ask a silly question here.

I've been out of the loop lately - to be frank I haven't played FS in almost a year. Was distracted by many other games and commitments/job.
I have a serious backlog of campaings I have to go trough one of these days..you guys have been busy during my long silence.

Glancing over the campaigns I did notice something.... of all the models I made, it seems the GTI Aeglos is by far the most - if not the only one - used. Now of course I don't have time atm to play trough every campaign and check out of that is statisticly correct, but it does make me wonder...did anyone notice it too?

I've seen my ships so rarely used...but then again I only tried several of the many campaigns available.
Is anoyne even using them (or planing to)?

AFAIK a lot of campaigns are using Your models, including Blue Planet, Dawn of Sol, Cerberus: Emergence, Luyten Civil War, my own Shadow Genesis and possibly many others too... And yes, I'm planning to use your models in next chapter of SG and in second, mysterious mod.

I'd like to do something with the Wepwawet and Orion "someday." :D

Well no offense, but most of your ships (especially large ships) are old, tilemapped, and not really visually appealing by today's standards. Some (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/GTF_Falcon) fighters (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/GTF_Phoenix_%28TrashMan%29) however are nice enough, as well as some capships (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/GVMCv_Wepwawet).

Some ships (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/GVI_Abthys) also seem to not be available anymore. I've been meaning to dig a few old campaigns I seemed to remember this one was in, but haven't been around to it yet.

This one (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/GTCv_Cobra) is pretty nice too.

I used your Thunderbolt (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/GTB_Thunderbolt) and your cobra in The Antagonist. Thanks for that.

Oh yes, Cobra. Asymetrical designs are da best.

The main problem with those ships, especially large ones, is that they're relatively low-poly compared to what is now in use. The Cobra, for example, could use a bit more detailed remake, so could many other designs. Also, texturing and smoothing is less than optimal on most of them.

I think the smoothing issues are an occasional byproduct of direct TrueSpace to POF conversions.

Yeah, that's pretty much the cause. Truespace models require fixing in another program in order to have good smoothing.

The most popular Trashman's designs are med-poly, and I didn't found it as a problem. Including my favorite Aeglos, Nareos and Archangel. Character and shape of the ship are more important than count of the polys. Of course up to date remake would be great for them. I saw newest Archangel and Armageddon and they were almost as detailed as Oddgrim's or Scooby Doo's models, but they were never finished. To be honest I used to have hope to see them finished. I still have... They're great.

Oh, and to answer your original question I'm using the Blade and Orion MKII.
