You said "There is nothing that fills me with more dread than the concept of the eternal end of all life."
After a VME, there is no chance of life ever redeveloping again (Well, technically there is, but it is questionable whether that would be life as we understand the term).

Yes. And the same is true for other end scenarios, all life dies forever.

Okay, so basically, existence fills you with dread cos it will end eventually. Glad we had this talk.

Yes. Well, sort of, but close enough.
I am trying to figure out what Battuta's point was, if there was any confusion.

Come on. There was no need for that. If there is nothing about the end of everything that disturbs you in any way, then I'm happy for you. But there is no need to denigrate the rest of us mere mortals who cannot attain to your superior state of fearlessness.

How do you get that from his post? I'm not saying you're wrong, his post confused me.

Hang on a second. It's one thing to be afraid for ones' own continued existence, or for those around you, or to be apprehensive about the future.
But.
If you're really feeling dread when confronted with the prospect that life itself does not go on forever, then I just have to mock you, because as things to be afraid of go, that is pretty damn silly in my estimation, even for the purely philosophical level of being afraid that I assume we're talking about here.
For me, it's the equivalent of not liking the wetness of water, the brightness of light, or the oxidizing nature of Oxygen. It's a fundamental property of the world we live in, one we cannot change and only comprehend, and as such, I think it's better not to worry about it and carry on regardless.
And if we're being honest, noone, not Lorric and not you, is actually worried about these things, because these things are waaaaay too abstract for us to get an emotional handle on. I mean, if you're obsessed about one way all life on earth could end instantaneously, there's a whole menagerie of imaginary threats available to fill your days and nights with nothing but dread, most of them actually much more credible and immediately threatening than what is being discussed here.

You're wrong. Believe it or not I can if I think about it hard enough. And nothing inspires more dread. Nothing.
I don't wander around in a permanant state of fear though, if that's what you're thinking. Only if I think really hard about it. I'm not in a fear state now, nor have I been at any time in this discussion.

How dare anyone be bummed out about the universe ending.

Indeed. :wtf:
....then I just have to mock you...
No. You don't. You really don't. And that's what I'm calling you out on.
I mean, it isn't like I'm curled up in the fetal position every time I contemplate the universe ending, but it is disconcerting for me. That feeling is a large part of my motivation for trying to understand the physics of cosmology and eschatology better. I like the ideal of continuity. I will die, but life will go on. Humanity will eventually die out, but the universe (and hopefully, life) will go on. There is some comfort in that. The idea that it all will eventually be for naught, just one big vacuum diagram in the sky, is unsettling to me.
Soooooo sorry I don't measure up.

Well said. And then there's the simple fact that no one chooses what to be afraid of. Mocking someone for feeling the emotion of fear is just wrong period.

Because how dare you have any emotions! Everything must be logical!

Different people's minds work differently. You may view things in a very logical and analytic manner, but for many people (myself included) the thought of a universal heat death is at least a little unsettling.
In my observation it would seem that you have a personal problem with Lorric. I mean, this is the second time in recent memory that you've gone off on him for no particular reason.

I am strongly suspicious of this.

Goddammit, how stupid can I be.....
My apologies for my behaviour. It was uncalled for, and I deserved all the hitting over the head I got.
