Title: Game crashed and Windows Shut down
Post by: Kiloku on March 31, 2013, 01:41:23 am
I never experienced such a bug. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any log file.
I was playing the first mission of the second campaign of Blue Planet: War in Heaven (the first actual sortie, not the previous ones which are just for story progress). Mid dogfight, the game crashed to desktop, then xpadder popped up asking if I wanted to save the profile before quitting. That's when I noticed the computer was shutting down. I tried to open notepad and write something in it so that I could stop the shutdown with the "do you want to save?" dialog, but notepad simply refused to open. I tried opening the task manager, it also didn't open. One by one, all my running programs closed (as in any regular shutdown) and the PC progressed with the shutdown itself.

I have no idea how the hell that happened. The closest thing I have to a log is the fact that wxLauncher said "Freespace 2 exited with a message of <6 or 7 figure number starting in 105>"
I was running FSO 3.6.19 Nightly Build 9610 (SSE Enabled)
I attached a DxDiag.txt, if that info can help.

Granted, this could have been caused by something other than Freespace, as I've been playing it all day with no major issue, but to me, it's the main suspect.

EDIT: I can't reproduce. I had played further into the mission before (the crash happened early in my 7th attempt at it) with no problem before, and I just tried again to see if the crash would happen, and it didn't, so I can't run the debug build to get a log.

Unlikely to have anything to do with FSO. Something initiated shutdown of the computer and you can find details of the action in event logs. See http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/160855-shut-down-view-details-last-shutdown-computer.html for assistance.

"The process C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe (COMPUTERSAURUS) has initiated the restart of computer COMPUTERSAURUS on behalf of user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for the following reason: Operating System: Recovery (Planned)
 Reason Code: 0x80020002
 Shutdown Type: restart
 Comment: "

Well, while I still have no idea what caused it, I know it was not FS2, so I guess at least for this forum, case closed. Thanks for the help, Fury.

Uh, hey. I had a thing like this the day before yesterday. Though I was playing FTL at the time. Suddenly it just quit itself, no new programs would open and then Windows decided to restart and there was some update dialogue in the shutdown screen. So I too would guess this is not FSO-related, but at least there is someone else who experienced this. It'd be great to find out what exactly causes this.

The fact that event log gives three clues:
- Initiated by svchost.exe
- Operating System: Recovery (Planned)
- Shutdown type: Restart

Indicates the reason computer was restarted is Windows Update. If Windows is set to automatically download and install updates, it will force a restart after certain time has passed to apply any updates that require restart. I do not remember what the exact wait time is, but it might be somewhere around 6 hours. This forced restart doesn't care what apps you're running at the time. Please review Windows Update history from Control Panel to see whether updates were installed on that day. If yes, then there you have your reason.

Weird, because usually Windows Update gives me warning a few hours before shutting down, so I go into the cmd and use the shutdown -a (IIRC) to stop it. I saw no warning this time...

Yeah.. I habitually disable the auto-shutdown for updates on all my rigs. Can't have things going offline mid-render.
