I've made a new model for an assualt fighter/ bomber - the GTB Scimitar.
Basically, I want suggestions on how to texture this (what style), and any recommendations of tools - or indeed offers of help (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif). I want to try and use only one map - I'm not sure how to do the other LODs like that, but i'll sort it as I come to it.
As far as the model
goes, here are some early piccies with basic maps. I made it by extruding and scaling from a single cube in Blender, and I'm quite happy with the results. There will be big underwing turret cannons under the wings.

It's either that or capital7a. I wanted something like the Medusa maybe - i nicked some of the design off of it. Boanerges.. maybe a bit green tho... I want to make it blue now I think of it (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Indeed! Quality work Aldo. Max is good for texturing as is blender if you can't stretch to 3dsmax's price tag.
Oh yeah, I have a great tutorial for single map texing but it's for max. Give me a holler if yuo want it.

You can. Its not quite as good for texturing as MAX is, but you can't beat the price.

I remember Max Sterling mention on the VBB that you can do some stunning stuff with Blender, but it save the maps in dodgy formats that nothing else can read.
Hmm... maybe if I remodel the missile bays to fit into the main hull.... had some texture over-lap with using Lithium....
Incidentally I seem to get much better results in Blender if I start out with a cube and extrude rather than a using circle.

fairly crap I know - It's an ultra low poly model I made for testing the cloaking thing I was working on earlier - the important thing being that it's all one map (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) - so I can do it. It looks alot like an old FS1 Valkyrie fighter with upside-down wings. But keep it up - I like!

This is a good tutorial on how you should use Textporter (a 3rd party plugin) in 3DS Max. The tutorial is for a character model but this could easily be applied to a ship.

I agree Setekh, the standard of work around here is great. I need to pull my socks up and actually build some good models, some of you guys are making me feel like an amature (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)
By the way the link that Pez posted is to the same tutorial that I was talking about, to date I've yet to find a better way of single map texturing.
