R.I.P.

While always witty, his reviews were drifting a lot the last few years. Still, the man was in many ways the prototype for the reviewers of today in his wit.

The news was a pretty big shock, since he just announced yesterday that he was scaling back his work to focus on treatment for the cancer recurrence; it wasn't the sort of thing you'd expect to hear from someone who winds up passing the very next day. I never put much stock in critics' viewpoints for much of my life, but I always enjoyed reading his reviews, and I admired how much he interacted with his fans. And hell, he was cool enough to get parodied on Animaniacs. :(
