Title: How to get mildly interesting 1-on-1 fights out of the AI?
Post by: Lepanto on April 04, 2013, 11:14:42 pm
In a campaign I'm working on, I'm trying to have some small mini-boss fights between the player and enemy ace pilots. The one major problem I've been having with FREDding these battles is this: the AI, at least in the situations I'm making, doesn't seem suited to having exciting 1-on-1 fights with the player. I'd like the mini-boss fighters in question to have sharp turning fights with the player that at least briefly pose a moderate challenge to a competent FS player, when the player is fully concentrated on taking them out. For my base AI profiles, my campaign uses older BP2 Fury AI.

The problem is, though, that in battle, the enemies tend to make wide turns away from the player and just evade my primary and missile barrages. Once they have gone evasive like this, they only turn to attack the player if I'm not directly facing them. This evasiveness makes these fights be insufficiently entertaining and take too long for my purposes. I'd like some way to modify the AI profiles so these enemy fighters are more aggressive and are constantly trying to face you.

I've created a custom AI class with reduced patience, increased turning rate, and reduced get away chance, but this doesn't seem to change AI behavior to be more aggressive the way I want. Are there any changes I can make to the AI profiles to make them work the way I want?

Thanks!

See Liuzqo Derfa from WoD: Stranded.

Do the ships have glide and/or sidethrusters? (There are some AI settings to take advantage of these and make the AI super aggressive).

Maybe also try experimenting with stalemate time/distance threshold.

Also try messing with Courage and Evasion (you might get better results with lower values, experiment).

Thanks for the suggestions. Fiddling around with some stuff. My campaign is pre-FS2, so ships with glide wouldn't make much sense.

It would be interesting to see the results of these experiments- as in what settings make the AI behave in what manner.

You already have some examples of 1v1 AI you can work from!
