Title: Your right to use the English language has been revoked.
Post by: MP-Ryan on April 05, 2013, 09:38:23 am
http://www.buzzfeed.com/daves4/people-who-should-not-be-allowed-to-use-the-english-language

This is why I don't have Facebook or twitter accounts - I would randomly follow around friends-of-friends and berate them for their spelling and grammar.

HLP forumites (who shall remain nameless for the moment) unable to distinguish between "then" and "than" should pay particular attention to #4.

I recently saw a sign in a shop window stating "Welcome to are new shop!"

Ha ha ha, that's a great start, I'm sure that business is going to be booming!

loved Robby, the comma guy.

Now that you mention the tattoos again, I was amused by them of course, but I kind of thought well it's the tattooist's fault, not the person's though. But now I think about it again, they're proudly displaying their bad tattoos! Which makes me wonder if they specified the design of the tattoos and the tattooists just went along with it... and laughed their asses off after the people left!

I remember my Mum telling me once about someone who had a tattoo, supposed to be her boyfriend's name in Chinese, and she showed it to a Chinese waiter in a Chinese restaurant.

"Look, my boyfriends name!" She said proudly.
"No, that says 'I am a kung-fu fighter.'"

Oops...

This provided the best laughs of today for me! Thanks for sharing, I may share this in Facebook, if I think that certain young ladies can take the hint... Number 22 and Robby had me on floor laughing

But on the other hand, the other half of me is saying that this is because English is like French in the way that it is not pronounced as it is written. Or perhaps it's just plain and simple laziness.

#38?

They screwed the (kids') joke up.  It's supposed to be: "Why is six afraid of seven? -- BECAUSE SEVEN EIGHT NINE!"  It's a pun, and it's not 'nerdy' in the slightest.

This one had me literally cringing in pain.

The rest of the list was hugely entertaining, and demonstrates why I'm not on Facebook: I'd be forced to probably declare blood feuds on a large number of friends for their abuses. I'll stick to texting, where at least I can excuse them for having to use tiny keyboards.

And it reminds me of something that always happens when there's a thread like this, I second-guess my own typing, and make a bunch of mistakes when making these posts :D

And then there are those mistakes that are made so often they're not even funny anymore... http://theoatmeal.com/comics/misspelling

The sad thing is I've talked to school teachers occasionally and they've commented on students handing in papers full of this stupid gibberish.  The kicker is when they are marked down for it the parents complain that it's not fair.

There's an old high-school classmate I'm friends with on Facebook who's the same age as me (mid-20s), yet adopts the textual mannerisms of an 11-year-old girl in almost every post.  It's like watching a train wreck.

Once in a while this gets my knickers in a twist because we Europeans are poked fun at for our English. Meanwhile, in the Anglophile countries, they're sodomizing their native tongue like this! :-/

the ones poking fun at european english are the same ones that want to *****slap the uneducated ****heads featured here though.  we don't claim them.

Oh don't worry, the people who can't even be bothered to learn their own language to even a basic standard really bug me too, and I'm English. I can't understand why people wouldn't want to learn their own language. It makes so many things so much easier.

Really? Where did it hurt? Your brain? I didn't think such a reaction was possible.

Yes, in my brain. Because I read things as they would be spoken, I read this like somebody was sitting here, taking 2 second pauses at every period, mispronouncing "anniversary" and everything else. And it did cause literal psychological pain, whereby, I cringed.  :ick:

Hmmm. I wonder if this is just that you are unusual or it can happen to others? I also read as if someone is speaking, but when I run into this garbage, my brain just filters out the garbage and filters in what should be there, though it does slow my progress. Unless it's so unintelligible that I don't know what it's supposed to be. That is if I don't just ignore it.

I decided to read it literally. I did feel strange and after I finished there was a bit of pain at the upper sides of my head at the back for a moment. How strange. I wonder if it's the stop start stop thing.

I'm serious. Why would you think otherwise?

When he said "literally" he did not actually mean "literally," for FRED's sake! People very often exaggerate their pain and disgust on the internet to express disapproval. I mean... come on.

Are you sure? I got the effect he described. Though nowhere near as severe. I use literally as a way to seperate such things from exaggerations. Anyway, surely he would have just clarified it was a joke if he was joking? It's very descriptive what he says.

I have and do experience physiological pain upon reading comparable statements for the first time.  It's usually a rather sharp (if slowly emerging) pain behind and between the eyes (though it is slightly off-center).

im always of the opinion that languages are rebellious amorphous blobs that will not allow themselves to be constrained by an established set of rules. for example i consider american english to be completely different from english. that said, i still find everything that these kids poke into their phone type devices to be completely atrocious such that i think there needs to be a law where by the device in which they entered the offending text be inserted into their rectum. i would then bring back brick phones and those massive ibm keyboards of days gone by.

I blame Webster (http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/colour-and-color.aspx) for this mess.

He was the pioneer of text speech after all, with his "Writing things my way uses less letters" ideas. :p

Oh and I second Nuke's law for grammar enforcement.
