Very easy to fix - something's missing from your install.

Please run a debug build, then post your fs2_open.log file, which will allow us to fix the problem.

That's a good start, but we need the file called fs2_open.log, located in FreeSpace2/data. It has a bunch of information on your install configuration that'll let us spot the trouble.

Well I know the trouble already, you're running 3.6.18 witch doesn't work with BP use this instead http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83318.0 .

That would be a part of it, but it's not the whole story. There are other issues here as well, and only the log will tell us which ones.

Okay, assuming you're now using one of the builds you were  linked to above, the problem here is caused by your install structure. You have two problems: blueplanet2 is in the wrong place, and you don't have blueplanet or the mediavps at all. The reason the install instructions insist that you need to have the MediaVPs and Blue Planet 1 installed is that Blue Planet 2 doesn't work without them.

Here are the step by step fixes:

Move the blueplanet2 folder from FreeSpace 2\FreeSpace 2 to plain old C:\GOG.com\FreeSpace2.

Download and install blueplanet1 (or use the Blue Planet Complete Installer available right here in the pinned thread at the top of this forum). edit - it's right here http://blueplanet.fsmods.net/BluePlanetComplete.exe

Download and install the 3.6.12 MediaVPs. Make sure they're located in C:\GOG.com\FreeSpace2\mediavps_3612

When all this is done, move your entire FreeSpace2 folder to C:\Games\FreeSpace2 to prevent possible string errors due to long filepaths.

In addition, you should make sure that you have a resolution of 1024x768 or greater at 32 bits of colour depth set in the Launcher. Given the age and general crappiness of your GPU, you should also delete all "advanced" vp files (bp-adv.vp and bp2-adv.vp).

Thansk for the advice guys, its gotten to where I can actually run the game. But when the mission finishes loading (still on the loading screen before briefings etc) it crashes and says "freespace 2 open - antipodes has stopped working"

Your video card is choking on BP's deferred lighting code. Easy fix, though. Go to the nightly builds forum, get the latest nightly for your system; then get the low-end compatibility package from this thread. http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83606.0

Just did both of those and now as soon as I get to the loading screen, the program stops responding

scratch that. i played around with a bunch of settings and itll work now. new question: on the dreamscape, is it normal to have a big grey square at the "bottom"

It shouldn't be grey. Remove the 'adv' VPs from your blueplanet and blueplanet2 folders.

I'm not immediately seeing the problem. Your hardware may just be below spec somehow. Try enabling the no-glsl and VBO troubleshooting options in the launcher.
