Title: Mjolnir with thrusters...
Post by: joek on June 27, 2001, 01:46:00 pm
Anybody ever think of making a Mjolnir with thrusters so that it can turn and follow it's target to make better use of it's beam?

THen we;ll add armor, bigger engines, maybe a hangar, some anti-fighter beams...what shall we call it? I know, a capital ship  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

It doesn't have to be that complex or overkill... just an extra whatever to turn it and aim it. I got the idea when I was testing a configuration to protect a node (thinking 6 Mjolnirs around the node: top, bottom, all four sides). I wasn't getting too happy with their poor performance so I started shooting one... but when I was hitting it on the fin it started turning... that's when I go the idea.

you can't have a sentry gun to spin. The only way is to add a turret, so, basically, a new model.

Techincally, you could put thrusters on the mjolnir since its labeled "cruiser" in ships.tbl.  BUT you will have to rotate it unless you want the beam to fly skyward and the rings pointing toward the ship.

In case you didn't get what he was saying, try putting some Mjolnirs around a node in FRED2, and have then "point to" the node. They will turn their sides to the node. The side their beam cannon is on is actually the left or something. So even if they had a turning speed but no velocity, and they were given orders to attack any hostile ships, they would face their sides towards the enemy ship, thus rendering the beam turret useless.

Can that be fixed though? I'm no modeler, but if when you model a ship you define which way is "forward", can't someone take the Mjolnir model and fix it up?

It shouldn't be a problem, and while whoever is at it, they can add the 2nd beam turret and the 3 missile turrets to the model like it says in the tech room!  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
