Have any of you played the campaign "Homesick"? Is it worth trying out?
-
Loads of people have played it, it's a classic.
-
Its pretty old... But very cool anyway. One of the "Must Plays", alrough I think it need small refresh. For example Black Wolf's hangar attachment would be great for that, cuz Deimos class corvette is our homeship in Homesick.

Too bad it doesn't work properly in FSO.
If I ever finish this campaign in retail, maybe I'll start a restoration project. It's badly in need of one.

It doesn't? Is that because of the red-alert bugs (which indicate a problem with FSO instead of the campaign), or something else?

Yeah, it's the red-alert bugs, and it's been that way for years. It appears to have something to do with a large number of ships having red-alert status.

Can't you just play from the techroom?
-
I played through it with the first trunk build that used the new pilot code without a problem a few weeks ago. It should work again with 3.7.
Even it was very hard sometimes, because there are three or four combat missions in a row linked with a red-alert and so you have only one hull in all these missions. I do not remember that Homesick was so hard the last time i played it (should be after the release of 3.6.9), even on Easy.

I'll admit that I haven't yet tested this campaign with the new pilot code. I will give it a shot and see whether the red-alert problems appear to be gone.
-
I got all kinds of red-alert problems... :(
But I still finished it. Quite enjoyable. Long, and a bit repetitive... but the effect of such a long journey really paid off. I found myself actually 'homesick' by the end. I don't think I'd play this again anytime soon because of how repetitive it is, but I'm definitely glad I played it once.

the ending was a bit silly though, to be fair
-
Agreed, I'm pretty sure not accepting a surrender is not allowed
-
Overall a fun campaign, though the ending was kind of depressing.

Yeah; as Battuta pointed out, arbitrarily cruel authorities are a common thing in Russel's works.
