Title: IBM now builds solar power plants.
Post by: Grizzly on April 26, 2013, 11:08:13 am
pretty interisting ones in fact (http://tech.slashdot.org/story/13/04/22/1935237/ibm-models-human-blood-system-to-build-solar-power-prototype). Very similar to Helios One from Fallout; New Vegas (Concentrate solar power on one point), which previously was not possible because it would set things on fire. Now they are gonna use their own cooling systems to pull it off.

Which is really really nice.

10 cents a KWh, huh. Put it in the market and then I'll believe. Lots of luck to them though. Can't wait for a solar future

Well yeah, they need something to keep them busy after selling most of their hardware department to Lenovo :D

The direct cooling technology the HCPVT  systems uses is "inspired by the hierarchical branched blood supply system of the human body and has been tested by IBM scientists in high performance computers, including the Aquasar supercomputer and SuperMUC, IBM said. Those computers use water to absorb heat from the processor chips, which is then used heat the facilities.

Makes sense, I heard computer cooling (think of supercomputers, also datacentres) is a pretty interesting engineering challenge nowadays. Good to see IBM sharing their knowledge on the subject
