This month's theme is: GIANT BEAMS. Show me large beams that made FreeSpace so FRICKING AMAZING AND BETTER THAN EVERY OTHER SPACE SIM IN THIS SPACE-TIME UNIVERSE
unique when it was released. And I want to see good quality beams, not just a good quantity of beams!
Be sure to check out the Screencap Script (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=82173.0) to take great pictures! And I don't want to see any hud in the pictures! NONE!
EDIT: Rules to be perfectly clear:
No HUD. No Photoshop. Max 3 entries per person. Final Destination.

Unique you say? Colony Wars had beams first :)

Well I guess that means this month's contest has been based on a lie so I must close it.
Thanks for playing everyone!
-
You can always come up with another idea, such as showcasing stations *excluding the Arcadia* ;)
-
I have edited the original statement with one that should be less controversial. The original topic stands!

"FRICKING AMAZING AND BETTER THAN EVERY OTHER SPACE SIM IN THIS SPACE-TIME UNIVERSE"
Overcompensating? :D
Still, Freespace 2, even in just retail, is the best such game I've played. Though I have only played Freespace 2 as a PC game, though G-Police did get a PC release, I played it on the PS1.
-
Well, some short questions - how do i actually disable the HUD ingame, and is additional image editing allowed?
-
how do i actually disable the HUD ingame
There is a keybind for that that you can find in your ingame controls. I believe it defaults to Shift+O or something.
-
Yes, it should be Shift-O that toggles the hud.
And no image editing (unless you need to resize or crop it). We want these cool pictures to showcase what the engine can do, not just what we can photoshop. ;)
-
Can you enter more than one screenshot?
-
Max 3 entries per person.

Hmmm. Okay, thanks!

I suck at photoshop, so it wouldn't make a difference anyway. Just asked because some pics from previous contests just look so... completely awesome :D - with sun effects and the like my jaw dropped.
Anyway, i'll begin with a Deimos getting beam-sliced :

No matter what I try, the outcome is written in my destiny. And destiny can't be bypassed.

You could surrender, Belisarius :)
Keep looking, Belisarius. If the Hawkwood can take out the Colossus...

Hmm, let me just sneakily recup this screenie I took a long time ago for a different purpose :nervous:

That beam is made of condensed tears and judgement. It is also powered by win. Gibe lienk, pleaze. :D
Amazing picture.

The beam as pictured was designed by Droid803, and can be found in his Tides of Darkness mod. In ASW2, you can find an upgraded version with - IIRC - improved turretglow and impact effects by ShadowWolf1991. Glad you like it :D

DEM BEAMZ !!! Most bend time and space !!! With pretty colors !!!
So, last month I decided to put every single beam type present in one of my mods and have them fire at something. Not pictured here: recharging LRed, BFRed and a few other minor beams:
Didn't really have a truly 'Giant' beam though. Fun fact: black beams are DANGEROUS on regular starfields:

And now, using the PUNY, INSIGNIFICANT befriendinator beta-tester beam, the MIGHTY Shivans (of doom) decided to make the bestest beam ever. So much the bestest that they in fact decided to change their trademark red color scheme to a more appropriate one (note: pink Shivans are actually kinda cute :P). BEHOLD, the BFFRed, ULTRA-MEGA-BEAM of Forever Friendship of Hope! (note: do NOT call it a "BFFPink"):

Now if I could just get that screencam script working ...

That poor Comet. :(
-
Don't worry, it's invulnerable. ;) The cruisers weren't though, a couple of them blew after I took the shots.

:welcomegreen:
:nervous:
-
X3N0-Life-Form, i can haz ur beem pak?
-
I'll try to upload it tomorrow :)
-
Black beams look sick!
-
although i can't help but wonder why the black 'glow' and the white core of the beam seem to be offset...
-
I once had a VHS player that went funny. It resulted in changed colours when I watched the tapes. Including black light. I had some fun with that. I was particularly fascinated by the black light.
EDIT: Here's a black beam for you :)

The Black and White are actually two different beams. There are two white turrets and a single black turret (replacing the main lilith's beam). Note: the Black Beam fired twice because its fire wait time is shorter than the beam's life.
Also, DEM BEEMZ (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=84591.0) are uploaded.

(note: do NOT call it a "BFFPink")
You still haven't called it what it is.
STARLIGHT BREAKER.
-
I may not have any huge beams, but at least I can show you a huge amount of beams!

I'll just leave this here...

Dark Matter beams?

You can almost smell them.

No Photoshop!!!!!!!
That's it ! I am going for GIMP.
Here's my first screenshot, the box art of Freespace 2 (which surely makes it unique. :p)
NOTE : I haven't edited the image in any image editing program (and by any I also mean GIMP). The 'Freespace 2' title you see is due to the show-subtitle SEXP (surely it's allowed as Axem wanted to show what the engine can do). I have attached the mission below for proof.(with title image too.)
Place the mission in mediavps/data/missions and the Freespace_2.png file in mediavps/data/hud

Now that's how you try to win a screencap contest.
-
Ooooh, yes, that's impressive!
-
I've been thinking about doing that, you saved me the work (of thinking)!
brb, making wallpapers...

It has too much bloom though...

NOTHING CAN HAVE TOO MUCH BLOOM

Also those specular effects on the Deimos look like complete crap. I love the concept and the execution is mostly great, but the Deimos looks like it's made out of cheap plastic because of them.
-
It's OK. Maybe you guys can have an awesome idea next time. :) No need to be jealous.

Ans:
NOTHING CAN HAVE TOO MUCH BLOOM
I was playing the mission in Blue Planet mod along with its post-processing tables where desaturation is handled correctly. So, no, there is no bloom issue.

As I said I was playing with Blue Planet builds with deferred lighting (where 256 lights are handled instead of 8 AFAIK). Thus the quality of reflections and lightning effects is good. And THERE IS at least some metallic look on the Deimos (I can't see any cheap plastic look in it :nono: )
I also saw on wiki (the real one; not the freespace one) today under Freespace 2 SCP that someone named LordKazan had already attempted this. However his screenshot(I have attached it below) did not include the latest SCP features. So even if I do not win the contest, my screenshot could be uploaded there to show the recent landmark of SCP features.
And thanks, mjn. , Scourge of Ages, BTA and Lorric . :) Assures me that the hard work placing those ships with respective to view point paid off.

Bloom is not set table-side, but by command line.

No, I actually meant that there is high bloom intensity but also some good post effects which IMO does not ruin the image. Also I have seen youtube walkthroughs of people keeping high bloom intensity (for example, QuantumDelta) where the game graphics look awesome

Bloom, spec, and all those lighting settings are personal preference. Pick what you like and ignore the haters.

You can do what you like, but the thing about specular lighting is that it really shows up the fact that the model is just a flat, textureless shell of polygons. It's particularly bad on models like the Deimos because they're old and don't have much in the way of surface detail. I think your screenshot is very good, it could just be better in that one respect.

Oh, now I understand. Nothing I can do then until the Deimos gets HTL'ed. :sigh:
-
It has been HTL'd! Hades is poking at a revamp, I guess (finishing models is overrated)
-
Oh Damn! You are increasing my craving for the next version release of MediaVP's ........
-
No, uh, I mean, the model in the current MediaVPs, the one you took the screenshot of, is an HTL. It's just an older one.
-
I know it's kind of old HTL'd (same as Moloch, Orion, etc)
-
I seem to remember it being one of the first - after the Herc.
