Title: Ender's Game: The Movie
Post by: StarSlayer on May 10, 2013, 07:19:36 pm
Trailers Up (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=vP0cUBi4hwE)

It'll be interesting to see if they can translate it into film and do the course material justice or just screw the pooch trying to adapt it for the lowest common denominator.

Spoiler for those who haven't read the book.

Spoiler:
They just gave away the end of the movie!

Inorite, I was kind of surprised to see that.

It has Harrison Ford
What could POSSIBLY go wrong with that

I suspect a few people will be doing that.

Slayer's brain is a little slow on the uptake at the moment, just came back from a run.

Is that a moped joke?

I very much doubt that. The book was awesome, but Orson Scott Card is a bit of a, well, mammoth dickbag. I suspect Batts wants to see the movie without giving him any money - same goes for me. In my case, while I rarely torrent movies (I just prefer the cinematic experience) but this  may have to be an exception.

You know, I've somehow never managed to read the novel, though I did stumble across the original short-story that Card wrote first.  One of these years I'll get to it.

It's not really worth reading. The concept has been explored many times, by many better authors, and the truth is it doesn't really work.

If you want to read a good book about alienation, sociopathy, and combat, read Chohei Kambayashi's Yukikaze.

I predict that this movie will:
#1. Make lots of money.
#2. Completely suck.
#3. Cause lots of people who never have and never will read the book(s) to suddenly start quoting 'The enemy's gate is down' et al.  I predict that I will become quite pissed off with certain people over this.

The narration in the trailer has me suspecting that history shall repeat itself.  :nervous:

Also, does anyone else find it a bit odd that the children appear to be the wrong age?

The enemy's gate is down! Their rear is open for penetration! Ram them hard and deep!

You missed

#4. Since Ender's Game made a lot of money they decide to turn Speaker For The Dead into a movie too.

With more action sequences than "Miro climbs a fence".

They dont mind the murder part, it's the fact that the book mentions naked children in a room together :shaking: that had dem folks in South Carolina angry http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2012/mar/23/police-complaint-enders-game

To be honest I thought the book was ok but I read it when I was 13. I won't go to see it because then I dislike Orson Scott Card's bigotry.

Isn't that basically The Hunger Games too?

Anyway, I always thought Ender's Game was an anime...
*googles* oh, Zone of the Enders. That explains it.

Yeah I'll probably see it at some point. I'm a sucker for sci-fi in film.

I is confused. He's a mammoth dickbag (totally stealing that to use all the time) and you don't want to give him money, but the book celebrating dickbaggery is awesome?

Card usually does a decent job of keeping his personal agendas out of his writing.

Usually.

Fortunately, Ender's Game (the original book, anyway) is one where he succeeds at that.

That's really not how I remember it at all. 'Course, it has been close to twenty years since I sneered suffered through it.

Still going to go watch it though, cause:

I'm a sucker for sci-fi in film.

No he's pretty much waving a huge douchebaggery flag about what it takes to fight a war.

At the beginning of the trailer, I thought the starships in the book were U.S. fighter planes in the movie.

So I just saw the trailer for this waiting for Into Darkness, they really are chuffed about all their academy award winners.

The book has been in my mental list of stuff I really should read for years, but I still haven't bothered.

Ender's Game is pretty short, it shouldn't take more than a day or two.  I prefer The Bean Trilogy take on it, myself.

I thought the original book was vastly over-hyped and that the sequels (including the side-quels) were terrible.

I'd much rather see somebody make a good Honor Harrington movie/show/video game.
