Title: Blue Planet Age of Aquarius and War in heaven startup error
Post by: LordNevs on May 13, 2013, 08:01:23 pm
Hello, I am having an issue starting the mod/installing the mod that I hope will be easy to fix, here is my situation:

I am somewhat new to the entire FS2 system, but have past experience in modding. I have no idea why this isn't working.
I have used the Windows executable installer to install Age of Aquarius, he files all appear to be where they should be. I am
using the latest inferno build (3.6.18) and I have the 3.6.12 MediaVPS (I couldn't find 3.6.18 VPS so I am assuming they are universal?)
I have a good launcher that can run the game with the MediaVPS flawlessly, however. When I select BP in the mods tab in the launcher
and run it, I see the BP logo for half a second in full screen. Then I jump to a black screen where I can see and move my cursor. Upon
further exploration, I discovered that I could escape this window by launching the task manager. From there, I can see an error window
that says the following:

bp-shp.tbm(line 222):
Error: Required token = [#End], [$Subsystem:], [$Name], or [$Template], found [$Glowpoint overrides: ( "red_glow_10:1,2" )].

ntdll.dll! NtWaitForSingleObject + 12 bytes
KERNELBASE.dll! WaitForSingleObject + 18 bytes
fs2_open_3_6_18.exe! <no symbol>
fs2_open_3_6_18.exe! <no symbol>
fs2_open_3_6_18.exe! <no symbol>
fs2_open_3_6_18.exe! <no symbol>

Now, naturally I have no idea what that means, so I am hoping one of you guys do. I get a similar or congruent error window with
war in heaven too, which is quite worrying. I eagerly await a response, I have been waiting to play BP ever since I ordered the FS2
game disks a month ago.

Here is some quick additional information that may prove useful:

OS: Windows 8 Pro (Desktop) (64-bit OS)
FS2 Retail version (Installed off of a original set of disks I picked up on amazon for $25)
Inferno Build: 3.6.18
GFX Card: ATI RADEON HD 4200
Processor: AMD Athelon(tm) II X2 240 Processor
Ram: 7GB DDR3 (1066 I think)
Pc Model ID (HP): s5753w (HP Slimline desktop)

Thanks

You are using the wrong exe. Blue Planet doesn't work with the 3.6.18 builds. Select the 3.6.17 (BP).exe in the basic tab of the launcher.

Additionally, please post an fs2_open.log, either in ["code"]["/code"] tags (remove the quotes) or by uploading to pastebin or something similar. Instructions on how to obtain an fs2_open.log can be found here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,56279.msg1180359.html#msg1180359).

Age of Aquarius should, surely?

$Glowpoint override is a very badly documented feature that some coder implemented. As far as I can tell, it's designed to allow ships.tbl control over glowpoints, but there's no wiki data on when it can/can't be used (someone should fix that - undocumented features are useless features to 90% of the modder base).

In any case, try this (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83606.msg1670192#msg1670192). That seems to be similar to the errors you're having (the exact same error is reported later in the thread and solved therein).

Nope.

Again, nope. Glowpoint overrides are used by the deferred render code to implement glowpoint lighting.

There are two ways to fix this error. One is to use a build from this thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83318.0). The other is to use the compatibility package found here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83606.0).

NONONONONONONONONONONONO.

The build that comes with the Blue Planet installer has some serious bugs, including one that can destroy your pilot file. Instead, use the build found here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83318.0) (which is now version 3.6.19). (And if that doesn't work, follow Black Wolf's link above.)

So, wrong though I was, at least I pointed him to the right thread. :p

A bit, but not really - you pointed him to the wrong thread unless he wants to disable deferred lighting wholesale (which may be necessary if he has low-end hardware).

Uups. I thought it was just an 'if-you-have-problems-fix'.  :(

At the same time, maybe someone could edit the release thread to include that. #BackseatDrivingIsTheBestDriving

Thanks guys, it was the inferno build. I didn't see anywhere besides these forums that BP was incompatible with 3.6.18 until after I posted the topic. But I managed to find the right build, while the game isn't running the best (10-15 FPS), it is running. I should be able to smooth out performance on my own by messing with the graphics settings. Thank you for the help.

Someone should make a more refined and updated install guide for this mod, there were hardly any guides I could find online that weren't obsolete yet.

The install instructions (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=70745.0) right here are pretty much up to date.

If you want to improve performance, check out the compatibility package for low-end hardware here http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=83606.0]
