Hullo there. :)
Title says it all; so i just finished the FS2 campaign and I'm looking to download a few of the many mods around. But in any case I'm curious, what exactly is the biggest ship ever made in any mod?
I'm aware this depends on which ship type, so what exactly is the largest...
- Fighter/Bomber craft
- Capital Ship
- Installation
- Non-ship Object (e.g. asteroid, planet etc.)
Regards,

Hmm, there used to be a super-ship hype a while ago, with super juggernauts several times the size of the Sathanas. The community has mostly moved away from these: they are rather difficult make them fun for the player to interact with, tricky to move around the battlefield, take a lot of resources and take a lot of work to create and make them look good. I know the original Inferno used to have such massive ships.
I think Inferno still uses massive super-bombers, that we'll see in action again later this year.
The largest installation I can think of is the GTI Whitehall (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/GTI_Whitehall), I not sure if it's been used anywhere. Again, Inferno might have had massive installations as well, but someone that actually played it will have to confirm that :)
Outside Freespace, The Babylon Project had, well, Babylon 5. :D
Blue Planet uses a big asteroid in one of its missions, as well as a lunar landscape. Out of the FS universe, Diaspora also used a few big rocks.

Most of the "Biggest" records are probably held by Inferno R1 or Trashman. Biggest capital ship would probably be the SSJ Gigas from the old Inferno, since the Gargant was never actually released or used in anything AFAIK. Biggest Bombers would probably be the SB Vindhyachal (also Inferno) or Transhman's GTB Armageddon (Flames of War). Biggest installation... Probably the Whitehall, or the GTVA jump-gate (Again, Flames of War and Inferno respectively).
As for non ships, I'm honestly not sure. There have been modeled planets - Inferno used them - so probably... Earth, I guess?
Really, though, bigness as a point of separation between mods isn't something I (or many others I'd expect) really consider too closely. Also, most of those models mentioned above are either ugly in-game (due to texture stretching and just generally being old) or too big to be useful for gameplay. So "Super Big" ships don't have the same appeal they once did.
[EDIT]Ninjaed!

What was the Icanus dock called again?
-
Don't know anything that could possibly dwarf this: AI Pyrgos (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/AI_Pyrgos)
I bet one second of looking at it through the ancient FS engine even on lowest setting will Nuke my laptop meagre as it already is.

The Vorlon Planet Killer is 19,431.75H x 37,238.6W x 41,950.35D. The Earth landscape is 15,000H x 200,000W x 200,000D

EAI Andromeda. Pretty much a big, dumb object though, no armament of any kind.

Also keep in mind the nature of models. It is a trivial matter to take a large ship and rescale it to a very large ship. I seem to recall the serapis was modified a bit, retextured, and used as an ancient destroyer or something in inferno.

The Apocalypse from MT is 21km long.

The SF Astaroth was used as the super ship of a new race in System Madness.

Have we forgotten the Gargant? Wasn't it like 40km in size? http://hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/SSJ_Gigas_(Old) (http://hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/SSJ_Gigas_(Old))

Size is not an impressive trait of FS ships as (like Killer Whale pointed out) it's trivial to rescale models. The biggest ship ever made for FreeSpace, for the record, was Mai Dique, a rescale of the SOF Chaos.

For bombers I'd say the AB Satyr, SB Vindyachal and GTTB Armageddon are likely candidates - they're well on the way to cruiser size. Fighters, not so sure - depends on what you're willing to call a fighter :)
Capship, probably one of Inferno's old ships - there's already plenty of suggestions above. Installation, probably the AI Pyrgos (with a whopping 51.4 km). Non-ship objects: there's a few landscape models floating about, and I seem to recall a Ross 128 single mission (playing the FS1 intro) with an actual moon-sized moon.

Indeed. (http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/AD_Pylos)

News to me- in fact this is the first time I've ever heard mention of such a thing. Is there any further info available?

It may be a trap...

I'd have to ask Rian, it's an exclusive for her mod
-
i'll admit, i almost fell for it
what are the dimensions of the mai dique, then?
-
When you release, I think it would be a good candidate for the random gallery on the wiki's main page. It is severely lacking in such screenshots.

I'm sure it is. ;7

I think we're doing okay without having that sort of release featured on there. :D

The Skybox :P

Is it more impressive than the one Trashman modelled?

It took me a googleing of the SOF Chaos to get this. :Derp: Whelp.

Also the only FS ship with enough of a following to warrant its own theme song (http://mydickband.bandcamp.com/track/baker-dick).

Battuta wins the thread.

/me pedantically attempts to rerail the thread
The Skybox :P
 The skybox is, by definition, infinite, so every skybox ever made for FreeSpace qualifies. However, the first such model would be the Volition-made subspace effect for FS1.

Which was too small, as artifacts from that dark time tell us.
-
I'm absolutely dreading upgrading the Icanus. The new Sol Gate, Diablo, and Bastion have really worn me out already.
-
So take a break, I much rather the upgrades look good and having to wait a while than have you rush
